Another question regarding residency here. So I may be graduating off cycle from med school. Is it possible for me to start residency off cycle as well? For example if I graduate in December, can I start residency in January? I have heard some residents enter programs in January, but how would a position be obtained for such a start date? Is there any way to not go through the match and apply for open spots? Suggestions?

Some programs allow for a January start.

Yes, see above.

You apply through the match before you graduate and when you interview, you inquire about off cycle positions, or the possibility of starting right away, rather than waiting until June.

If you are a student at a US allopathic school, you are obligated to go through the match; independent candidates can sign contracts outside of the match.

I had the same question. But how could someone start residency on Jan and the match day is on March? Do such programs offer positions outside the match?
And is there many programs offering positions on Jan?

There are always residents dropping out of programs for one reason or another. Hence the ability to start off cycle.

well said.

to add, one thing to be aware of on the front end is sitting for your boards at the back end of graduation/completion of residency. i'm not sure about the other specialties, but to sit for the american board of internal medicine (abim) in the year that you graduate, you need to have finished your residency by july 31... and abim is only offered in august/september.

so, if you come in january to internal medicine... you finish in january 3 years later... and you won't be sitting for the boards until august/september. some people would find that to be a big deal, others would not. just be aware of that, as it may make a difference to you, or your prospective employer on the back end.

I had the same question. But how could someone start residency on Jan and the match day is on March?

Because you either sign a contract outside of the match or you match in March but don't start until the following January (as opposed to July). Most students who graduate in December would not be able to start residency the following month unless they are already licensed in the state; if they are FMGs the problem is even greater because you have to have your ECFMG certificate prior to starting which, if you graduate in December, will not happen before January.

So for those graduating in December it would be most likely that if they wanted to start in January, it would be following year, not the next month they started unless conditions above (ie, state license, ECFMG if relevant) are satisfied.

Do such programs offer positions outside the match?

Some may. Some may not.

And is there many programs offering positions on Jan?

No. FREIDA may list the programs but in general you have to ask about the possibility. Some programs serendipitously have an opening when someone quits, others are more flexible about the different start date. But it is not common.
