I'm a 2012 US MD grad applying for the 2013 match for a specialty requiring a prelim year (some programs offer categorical spots). So far I have 6 prelim invites (3 at academic medicine prelim years and 3 at some programs that are known to be more Cush). I really want to do a medicine prelim. One of my interviews was at my home program. In terms of my record, step 1/2 are 240s and 260s respectively, legitimate reason for delaying my residency that's explained in my PS (in a masters program for now), no research since before med school, and I've been told that I have good LORs. Am I gambling with this few invites? Will there be some IM prelims left in SOAP if I don't match?

I have a few prelim invites that were sent out in Oct. that I didn't respond to because I couldn't fit any more in my schedule -- is it legit to respond now to try and schedule them?

It's not the best situation in the world, but I've had friends call back programs where they canceled interviews and ask for the interview back (and got them!). You can try this if you are concerned. Make sure you have thick skin! I don't know the caliber of programs you are interviewing at, so it's hard to say if 6 is enough.

To answer your question about SOAP spots - I can say with almost 100% certainty there will be prelim spots leftover.

3 are university IM prelims and 3 are more competitive community prelims (applied to the associated TYs for 2 of them).
