Ok, so what are the reasons why radiology couldnt be outsourced? It seems that if you reworked the legal system in a way, you could get around the legal aspects of someone needing to be on US soil for a final read. Why can't this change?

Also, as far as encroachment from other fields....doesn't an image require radiology to final read it? Can a cardiologist read a coronary CT and collect the money from it, legally?

1. There are some procedures. Even outside IR there's VCUG's and enema's etc in peds. Heck our MSK guys do RF tumor ablation (awesome!)

2. "If you reworked the legal system." I wouldn't be too worried about this. Imagine the suit when a radiologist in Turkmenistan misses a basic (or even not so basic) finding. The hospital will have their head (and other parts) handed to them. "Mr. Hospital administrator please explain to the jury who read the film . . . I see. And they trained where? Uh-huh. And were licensed by who? mmhmm. So you had a foreign born, foreign trained radiologist, not licensed in the US read the film. And you trust patients lives to this at your hospital? How much, in round figures would you say that saves your hospital each year. Oh I see. Well how much was little Julie's life worth? Ladies and gentleman this 5 year little girl deserved better. Next time it could be you! etc etc etc."

something tells me you missed your calling....

so, didn't you answer your own question the moment you inserted a clause beginning with "if"?

also, medicare will not reimburse the professional fee for a radiology read if the radiologist is not physically located within the U.S. or its territories.

Why are physicians in other countries allowed to give a prelim read...since that read will be used to make decisions overnight. Anyone know the clause that allows this to happen?

I understand it was an 'if'. But lord knows we outsource a lot of things in this country already. I can't call Dell without calling India. I'm not saying that's an apple for apple comparison....but there have been a lot stranger things that have happened in this world. 8 months ago I could have said, well what if all these huge investment banks fail because of bad mortgage bets? People would have said I was crazy. I just want to know why it couldnt' happen. Don't mean to be a nervous nellie, just want to know the chances it won't happen. It's a reasonable question.

If you are tired of the question and don't want to hear it anymore, just ignore me. I was hoping for an open discussion because I often hear it can't happen, but feel I'm not getting the whole story.

Where have you seen this? I haven't seen it at any of the hospitals I've rotated thru.

Do you mean a US trained radiologist residing in another country like Australia? Yes those guys u hear about are US trained. I haven't heard of any hospital or group allowing non-US trained radiologists to give a prelim read.

Stop asking the same question over and over again. The answer is outsourcing is not the real threat. It only seems that way to ppl that don't know how things work and like to talk about the downfall of other medical fields not their own.

You are being a nervous nellie. Maybe u should look into another field. Oh wait, no field is 100% secure or did u think there was one.

Unemployment is 100% secure. You will always be frowned upon. 😉

Medicine, especially in the U.S., is the single most regulated industry in history. When was the last time you heard of someone getting sued for millions because they got bad service from the customer service guy from Dell?

I'm not tired of the question, but you've gotten the answers already, yet you persist, feeling that we're somehow "holding out" on you or something. We're not. In addition to the reason you provided yourself, I also mentioned the Medicare reimbursement issues, which you've neglected to further comment upon. If you'd like to learn more about it, then information is available on the ACR website.

To quote Magneto, official comic book representative of radiologists...

"Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers?"

And that could be changed with the stroke of a pen. I'll stop asking the questions as you guys feel pretty safe.

But to be fair, the government could make CT scanners illegal with the stroke of a pen, but it's incredibly unlikely they'd do that.

On an unrelated note, I wonder how many tesla Magneto could generate?

On an even more unrelated note, I wonder if Magneto has enough fiber in his diet.

From his straining, I'd say no. It's a shame poop isn't magnetic.

Do you actually know how long it takes government to act on things? Like the bailout package that was needed so desperately? It's not as easy as a stroke of a pen. There are many interests at stake. You think there's a king or something that actually can change things that easily?

You can find a doomsday scenario for almost any medical specialty.

As others have indicated, this is a pretty useless statement. When it comes to healthcare regulation and law-making, I'm having a hard time thinking of things that can't be changed with the proverbial stroke of pen.

thanks for your useless reply.
