I'm not so sure about the LOI. OU's wait-list letter said all files are closed and nothing can be added for fairness to all applicants. Is there any point in sending a LOI?

when a file is closed, i took it as do not send any more gpa updates, new test scores (april mcat), and additional letter of recs, volunteer, publication

a letter of intent is more on a conversational level? what's everyone take on this?

I just dropped off my letter of intent at the admissions office. I was told that the admissions committee and Dr. Hall don’t have to read them if they don’t want to, but they can read them if they so choose. Technically they aren’t part of your “official” file. Also, I was told that they currently have three spots to fill, which they will probably do tomorrow or Wednesday, and expect more people to continue to withdrawal albeit more slowly. Did I mention that waiting sucks!

hey class of 2009,

1) I was wondering if you guys receive any additional packages yet? (Info on housing, final financial aid package, schedules, immunizations, etc...) All I have is the big red acceptance letter =)

2) Do you guys know if there are any more rooms available in University Village? Any suggestions on housing at this point (i know it's very late)?

3) Enjoy the summer! Looking forward to meeting all of you this fall.

Chung's the man. Some study almost nothing but his book. For me, it was a combination of Netters and online resources, supplemented heavily by his book, and rounded out by lab.

Most interesting class for me was physiology, with anatomy a close second.

Least favorite classes (you didn't ask, but might be of interest): Biochem and Epidemiology.

Best teacher: I don't know about second semester, because I never went. First semester, although there were quite a few good professors, Dr. O'Donoghue (O'Don) was my favorite. He's a PA with his Ph.D. in neuro. Brilliant guy like the rest, but very friendly, funny, down to earth and his teaching style is very clinically relevant.

There were a few that I wasn't wild about either, but none were that bad.

I was just wondering - are there any other out-of-staters on this thread who will be going to OU? I'm a bit concerned about the financial consequences - I'd definitely love to go there, but costs are over $60K/year! I'd get the 1st year's tuition waived, but still that's over $200K in loans after all's said and done. I'd definitely love to absolutely commit to OU, but the money has me scared. that being said, I still need to sort out my housing situation, so anyone who needs/wants a roommate, feel free to contact me!
Thanks!

I had O'Donoghue on my interview committee. 🙂

He was very nice, and I really look forward to his classes.

So I dropped, so who ever got off the wait list, congrats.
It is a lot of money.

so this past weekend was my gf's graduation, her family (flew in from OKC) bought me one OUMed whitecoat, one OUMed T-Shirt, and two OUMed coffee mugs.... sigh. I can't describe the feeling when I saw myself with the OUMed whitecoat in the mirror (eventhough it's not inscribed with my name yet)... I realized that the long journey uphill was all worth it and that my dream of becoming a doctor is within my reach.

hey amx, what is serenity about? The trailer only shows a press conference session.

oudoc08, Boulevard Wheat is a mighty fine choice. I might just have to have one of my own this evening. Thanks to everyone, and I am already looking forward to August!

Serenity is the follow-up movie to what some consider to be one of the most underappreciated TV series of our time: Firefly. It ran on Fox for half a season back in the fall of 2002.

I strongly encourage you to pick up a DVD of it from Blockbuster, if you can find it. 🙂

I just tried the link, and the trailer worked for me. I'm not sure what's up. Which trailer link did you click? Quicktime or for Windows Media Player?

Ginz-

Congrats. The wait was well worth it 😀 . Looking forward to meeting you and everyone else.

I'm going to in OKC prolly early next week to look for apartments. Has anyone found a place? If you have already gone apartment shopping in OKC, where do you recommend to check out? I'm not that familiar with OKC, cause I grew up in the better city in the state, Tulsa 😉 . I do have a University Village aparment on hold, but I really dont want to get a random roommate cause you can never expect anything.

Lfesiam-do we need to go ahead and buy whitecoats, etc. I thought the school gives it to you (its the least they can do since we will be paying $120,000 or so over 4 years). Since you went to school in philly, i was going to ask you Pat's or Gino's? I went to philly for an interview awhile back and did the taste test, got to go with Pats.

Ginz-Again congrats and enjoy the well deserved partying the rest of the summer.

More duplex apartments are opening in Mesta Park/Heritage Hills if you want to live near campus (it's the only area I know well). Some of them are not that nice (out towards the perimeter of the neighborhood), but my wife and I live in a *great* fourplex apartment in the middle. It takes me less time to bike to campus than drive. There is an above garage apartment behind a large house on NW 20th (maybe 21st) just east of Walker with a sign and phone # out front. PM me if you want the #. Just drive around between Robinson and Classen (east/west) and 14th and 23rd (north/south) and look for signs. Other 'nice' neighborhoods are Crown Heights/Edgemere Terrace (north of 36th, west of Walker) and Edgemere Park (south of 36th, east of walker). Also, if you can find a decent house for around $80,000 (most likely in Edgemere Terrace), your mortgage is likely to be less than most rent. Check out maps.google.com and put in 500 NW 36th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73118. Move the screen around to see the area. Good luck!

edit: There are plenty of other good neighborhoods as well (more burbs as you head north towards Edmond), but I just moved here last August, and I don't get out much 😉

You don't need to buy a white coat. It is given to you in the ceremony. I guess it doesn't hurt to have an extra, but given that you'll only wear it a handful of times in 1st year (on rotations), it's not necessary to have another. The only other required times to wear them are when there is a clinical coorelation lecture with a patient.
Many people chose to wear theirs last year duing clinical correlations with guest physician speakers, but I personally thought that was idiotic.

I was also a little surprised to see that people didn't have the common decency to wear appropriate dress along with the white coats on those lecture days where patients were present.

Imagine this: A classroom full of students shroud in white coats. Several wearing ball caps, many wearing t-shirts, and quite a few in shorts and flip-flops.

Please don't.

Congratulations on finishing year 1! 🙂

Is there a dress code for class in general? Outlined or unspoken? I need to get some new clothes anyway, so I might as well factor that in as well. 😛

Thank you for your nice comment.

There is no official dress code for the majority of first year. Exceptions would be for clinical rotations, and a couple of other times such as PCM interviews which are recorded.

However, I am in conversation with our faculty concerning a situation that concerned me last year.

There are occasionally clinical correlations, where patients with rare or interesting disease processes come into the classes with a physician facilitator to teach about his/her particular situation.

We were expected to wear our white coats to these lectures.

Unfortunately, it was not specified what else to wear.

Imagine a class full of students clad in baseball hats, t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops, shroud in white coats.

Hopefully, through what is going on right now, this won't be a problem with your class. I think if the expectations are made more clear in orientation, then this won't be the problem it was with our class.

In any case, I would encourage you and the other incoming MS-1's, to dress nicely when interacting with patients in any forum, and for that brief period to for that time, to lose the romanticized medical student image of the unshaven, unslept and unkempt.

As one of our professors wisely stated, "We respect our patients by respecting our profession".

hey pbeh - i like ginos better hehe, but when i'm hungry, they all taste the same to me, i'll eat anything (thank god for not giving me any food allergies) and oh we don't have to buy whitecoats, my gf's mom bought it for me as a gift, incase i need a spare one.

amx - firefly? i vaguely remember, will check it out. i have to get new clothes too

oudoc - haha i like your view on the "romanticized" medstudent lol.

bien - can't imagine that you bike to campus!! isn't it really hot in the summer & early fall? whoa!

enjoy the summer, i'll be in OKC around early July to look for apartments/ house and possibly a roommate (i'm clean but not a neat freak, easy-going, drink socially, hate smoking, a good cook, likes family guy/simpsons) I've been with a roommate for 4 years, never had any problems,

I have been hesitant to post on this thread considering that I was on other waiting lists. But I happily removed my name from all waiting lists and am officially going to OU. I was so happy a couple of months ago when I found out I got in. I'm doing research on the East coast and you know how snobby everyone is about their ivy league educations?! so I guess I got caught up in their mode of thinking and was going to choose a school based on rankings.
I could no longer avoid posting when someone mentioned Boulevard! It is my favorite beer and nowhere to be found out in this snobby area where Yingling is the best above average beer you can find! I can't wait to meet everyone and enjoy our first (of many) Boulevards together.

dr? are you in the philly area? (i noticed u mentioning the good ol' yingling) I'm currently finishing up my research job in philadelphia. hey i got an ivy-education but i'm not snobby, but i can totally see where you are coming from. that's one the main reason why i want to go to OU. it has a much friendlier and more laid back atmosphere.

however, you can find decent beer here. There are many good irish pubs in philly, my fav imports: harp & smithwick.
domestic: yingling, no contest here.

never had boulevard before though, have to try that when i get to OKC.

OU also has much better football than the east coast 🙂

You HAVE to go to one of the games, even if you hate football!

Luckily I'm from Ok so have experienced the joy of OU football. And I am quite the opposite of hating football. Everyone out here loves ACC basketball. don't think it even compares to big12 football
I'm actually in DC right now. Waiting till July 27 to quit, return to oklahoma and find a place to live. yikes!

Well, welcome home! July 27th is more than enough time to find a place to live. You can find a nice place near campus in probably one day.

found this in the Oklahoma Daily Classified:

ATTENTION MEDICAL STUDENTS

5 minutes to OUHSC, newly remodeled 1& 2 bdrm apartments. Beautiful neighborhood with parklike setting, rates as low as $350/mo. Ask about your chance to win a brand new Honda Civic. Woodland Hills Apartments, 524-1900.

I am a bit of a fair weather cyclist, but my car doesn't have a/c, so it's not a huge difference anyway...

i was thinking about renting an apt at the links, since i play golf and it's exactly 1/2 way bt the med campus and my parents house. i was pretty excited about it until i started reading some of the negative reviews from apartmentratings.com or whatever it is. anyone live there or know anyone that lives there and what they think?

Who did everyone choose as their loan lender? Anyone have any recommendations. My dad is saying Chase Manhattan or Bank of America. Does it really matter who you get?

Since your loans will likely sold anyways, an important thing to look for when choosing a lender is to try to find one with no or minimum fees.

Bank of America - Stafford Maximizer loan for health professionals,

has no origination or guarantee fees.

Here's the website:
http://www.bankofamerica.com/studentbanking/index.cfm?template=stb_studentloans_maximizer.cfm#health

If you want this loan, put lender code 83400400 on the OU fin. aid award letter. You don't need to fill out an application to send to Bank of America like it says on their website.

does OU have an option to put tuition payments on a credit card? if so, is there a finance charge? 17,000 AAdvantage miles would be a nice addition to my AA account every year.

I lived at the Links for six months and I didn't have a problem. Right now I am not sure where I will live, but I would have no problems going back.

hey MS1, where will you guys be living this fall?
let's take a poll! i'm trying to find a place now, i've just found out univ village is full =(. was wondering where do most medstudents live?

I'll be living in Moore.

My wife and I bought a house here a year ago, so I could go to class at the HSC, while we still maintain ties with friends in Norman.

Thanks. I imagine that's where I'll end up. I thought the apartments were pretty small so I'm thinking I might get the small 2 br and use one bedroom as an office/study.

If your loan gets sold does that modify any repayment incentives? Like Bank of America's graduated balance credit plan or Medloan's Cash-back after 33 on-time payments?

It's my understanding that whoever buys the loan buys the loan with those terms in place.

I went ahead with Bank of America. Thanks OUdoc for suggestion. Does anyone know about consolidating loans, cause I was planning on doing that?

Thanks

I consolidated my undergrad loans through Direct Loans (the original lenders) and it went pretty smoothly. I know one person who consolidated with a private loan agency and then had it sold to another. I think that's pretty common.

I didn't know Medloans had a zero fees option. Last year, I believe they were 3% orig. w/ a 1% guarantee fee. (Higher than most other lenders w/ a 2% orig. and 1% guar.)
