No joke. I used to want to go to OSU. Thank God, I came to my senses.

Orange makes me :barf:

If football is the most important thing to you, then yes, I agree.

I went to Baylor undergrad, so I can't really say anything.

Have a look at this kid's other posts. The others are about as intelligent as this one. If I was affiliated w/ OSU, I'd be pissed.

Go find another thread to troll, little man. Your penis envy isn't welcome here.

I envy needledick?

interesting.

Ok, here's the thing. This is a forum for premeds and medical students who are planning on attending, or do attend OUHSC-COM.

Get it?

I have to agree with this (even though we all know OU is better 😉 ). I'm a diehard sooners fan, but i do like to see OSU do well since they also represent the state on a national scale.

Actually, if you're referring to any of my posts, I was referring to Direwolf's trolling posts, and the fact that his other posts are all severely idiotic. He claims to live in Tulsa and have some type of affiliation with OSU, thus I was stating that if I were in an administrative postition with OSU, I would be pissed that the association was present.
In stating that this was a thread for OU premeds and meds, I was stating that no one asked him to come in here and start trolling. His first post was nothing more than an inflammatory rhetorism about Dr. Coburn. Why on earth, would you come into a forum where you are not part of the intended discussion community, and start flinging that crap?

That would be like someone affiliated w/ OU going into the OSU pre-osteo thread to start talking about how their school sucks or how DO's are a bunch of wanna-be doctors for no other purpose than to start a flame war.

No, I was not referring to your posts about Direwolf. I was more so talking about all this "my school has this so its better" or "our sports teams do this so we're better " blah blah blah. However, on that note, perhaps you are just fueling his fire by giving him the pleasure of receiving a response. He's just looking to start a fight.

Based on election results, a larger number of people don't, though.

This thread isn't here for some inane mudslinging political "debate" (yes, it's in quotes; we're in danger of falling into what could only loosely be described as a debate).

Please don't feed or try to argue with a troll. It only serves their purposes.

It's a message board. People can post what they want. I don't think that he was being obscene, and I happen to agree with him. My postings do not inhibit your ability to post what you think, so I don't know why you care.

I would have thought the fact that this was in the "pre-allo" forum would have been clarification enough, but maybe not.

Good luck on the waitlist.

It's not about disagreeing or agreeing with anyone's views; it's about about having intelligent discourse as opposed to being obnoxious and inflammatory. I care because making a statement in the manner that he/she did only serves to invite and incite hostility amonst people who didn't come here for a hostile political discussion.

Just in case anyone cares, I called the financial aid office asking if I needed to send my tax forms and what not, and the lady told me only if you were one of the students they wanted to verify (which I wasn't). So I'm assuming if you needed to send in your taxes to the FA office, they should have contacted you by now. Also, I asked her when we could expect award letters, and she said sometime next week (I know its obvious since next week will be the week of May 1st).

Thanks for the update! 🙂 It's nice to have a goal out there or something to focus on and look forward to. What comes after the letters get here, though? 🙄

Did anyone who reapplied this year have their grades slip? I think I can hold on to my A in physics 2 but I have a 77% in Org 2 and I'm looking at a big fat C. Anyone else have this happen? I do have somewhat of an excuse, three family members hospitalized in March/April, one died. Would I even want to mention this at an interview if I'm asked why I got a C? Will they think I'm just making excuses....

hey fellas when should i start collecting recommendation letters, i was thinking august, im only applying to state schools this time around, and i know both dont even interview till late so should i ask now? and have them hold them for me? Because i dont think i can hold them myself can I?
I asked my premed advisor head, i dont think she knew much of anything about this process =/. She didnt really give me any info other than you send with secondaries.

August is about when I started asking, which gave the profs plenty of time. They don't all have to be sent in at exactly the same time or at the same time as you submit your secondaries. August is early enough that if there is some sort of mix-up it can be caught early and fixed :luck:

hey rachelD,

i feel ya pain, orgo & gen chem are the bane of my existence 😡

i had a big fat C in orgo 1, but I made up for it by getting a B+ in orgo 2 & a B in orgo-lab. For me, there was no legit reason, ..... it is due to my immaturity and poor time managment skills. I screwed up my studying habits & spreading myself too thin in multiple clubs and social activities

gluck with orgolab!!!!! (if you haven't taken it yet)

If the reason is legitimate it can't hurt to bring it up if they ask, but to play devil's advocate, if the family stress caused you to struggle in organic, why didn't you do worse in physics? I'm sure they'll be thinking the same thing.

If you've got the time and money, you might consider repeating the course. I did that with Organic I. I got a C the first time through, but took it again the next semester and got an A.

I know it looks funny that I'm still able to get the A in physics. I can learn physics from a book, organic is different. I missed class and it's hard to get organic from a book (for me). I think you're right, I should re-take it. I should have a new grade by the time I interview.
Thanks

How many people are on the waitist this year, and what is the best guess on how many spots will open up?

I have ~6 weeks before I get my MCAT scores back and I was wondering of all of you who took the Kaplan course, how many had their scores go up from there practice test scores?

the magic number this year is 35, yeaaaap, sigh...
the prior cycle is 46

usually 50%-60% of the waitlist get accepted, the list is ranked somewhat,
another factor is if a non-resident drop, they'll pull a non-resisdent from the waitlist to fill the spot and vice versa with resident, correct me if i'm wrong.

+pissed+

I went up 1 point from my highest Kaplan practice test. I think most people go up at least 1 maybe two points.

I took Kaplan for the April 2004 exam, and I actually scored 2 points lower than what I was scoring on Kaplan exams. I had to retake it in August, and I used AAMC tests for practice, and scored a point higher on the real thing then I was getting on the AAMC exams.

I took the MCAT last August...scored 4 points lower than my average Kaplan exam. Very disappointing.

The lesson here.... Take the Princeton Review instead. My real MCAT went up 3 points from my last diag.

I used Kaplan books, Baron books, and took the practice mcat (3R or something like that) that is online. I felt that the Kaplan books' questions weren't that representative of the real mcat questions. I would also agree that the Princeton Review is probably better, and their books are too.

To back up Kaplan, I scored three points higher on the april 04 mcat than I did on my best kaplan practice test.

kaplan didn't help me too much, i got 2 points lower than what I was scoring
examkracker on the other hand, help me improved by 1 point.

it all comes down to how you do on a particular day

🙄

How feasible is it to teach Kaplan or Princeton MCAT classes and study for med school classes? I was thinking about teaching MCAT during the school year next year, but wanted to see if its pretty difficult with the courseload? Do any of the current OU med students know of any fellow classmates that are teaching MCAT and doing fairly well in classes?

Thanks.

Damn now that is not promising at all. I know they are definitely overestimating it. $17,416 for housing is absurd!!! OKC is not New York City, so I don't understand why they estimated housing to be that high. I'm definitely a little bitter that OU is pretty expensive for a public school.
How much do you think we can save from not buying books besides the couple that are required (I know we have talked about this before). Is it possible to get 38,500 in subsidized loans or is 8500 the maximum? I just figured if you had an EFC of 0 and were instead, things wouldnt look as bad from a financial aid stand point.

Has anyone else received their financiad aid package? Its the only thing I have to look forward to now, that and finals 🙄.

When I took The Princeton Review last spring my Bio teacher was an MS1 at OU med school.

By law, $8500 is the maximum for subsidized loans.
I'd estimate, the average amount you''ll spend on books for the entire year, should be no more than $400.00. That is if you take my advice, and don't waste your money buying more than Netters and Chungs. You need no books for biochem/genetics or psych. If you want the embryo book, I'm on the fence. I used it a couple of times, but the syllabus was probably good enough. As far as psych, get Costanzo's BRS Physiology book, and for neuro, don't get anything! I was told that a neuro atlas and the text were almost absolutely necessary. $150.00 later, I haven't yet cracked them once.

As far as housing, I say just borrow what you need.
Keep in mind, if you borrow over the $30,000 unsub, and $8500 sub, you have to fill out forms for private loans.

OU is a little expensive for a public school, but as a current student, I can say, I'd rather be nowhere else. I love being a med student here, and I think it's worth every penny.

As far as the last post about teaching MCAT, I'd say not to do it for the first semester, until you get your groove on.
After that, do whatever. I have almost as much free time this semester as in undergrad, but keep in mind I homeschool.

On a final note, today was the absolute last bit of phys. and neuro lecture material EVER!!!

Lata

I did a couple of points lower on the real thing that I did on the Kaplan tests.Overall, I wasn't too impressed by Kaplan. The only benefit I really saw is that you actually have someone making you study, and you are used to sitting in a desk all day on a beautiful saturday 🙂

I got the financial aid stuff today too, and my letter was pretty much the same, except I have an EFC of somewhere around 10000. 🙁

So if the award letter says nothing about any scholarships, we're completely dependent on loans? That's kind of disappointing. 😕

I received the same type of letter today too. I think someone made mention of tuition fee waivers earlier in the post???

I mentioned them, wondering if we really got them for both semesters(skeptical). I am an MS1, I got $3000 for the fall semester, allegedly (that is, according to the info they gave on the interview day) because my parents made under $100g. That wasn't actually a tuition waiver though; it was cash. I recall them mentioning tuition waivers on interview day, but I received none for 04-05. The only scholarship I received was what they told me in the acceptance letter (which admittedly was pretty good).

On my financial aid statement for 05-06, it says I received no scholarships ( I have straight A's). It could be they haven't decided who is getting what yet. Unfortunately, my letter also says that tuition has increased (@ $1500), whereas I thought they said it wasn't going up this year...very frustrating. Whenever I decided to go to med school, I started saving for it, and whenever I started, it was @ $9g/year (@ 3-4 years ago); now it's up to almost double that (16.9). Needless to say, when I set money aside, I didn't account for having to pay double what was then the current tuition. Our tuition seems outrageous for a state school. I don't really see how it is worth it, since I am basically paying $16g for access to a website w\ lectures on it. Of course, it's my choice to never go to class...

Does OU offer any grants? I saw on the website that you could be eligible for OTAG grant, so im wondering what you would need to receive that.

Man, I'm thinking ill be receiving my letter tomorrow or this weekend. When did most people have their FAFSA in by? I had mine complete by mid-february.

I'm on the waitlist and I received financial aid award letter. Is that common?
