I was looking at the schedule, and I think we need to be more careful in skipping biochem in the last two weeks. I assume, for instance, that it would bewhove us to go to the Mulvihill NF talk Monday morning. Also, our last lecturers seem to be interwoven (Mulvihill-Hanas-Knehens-Hanas-Mulvihill-Knehens). We have a couple of team (module-based?) exercises.

Sensitive interviewing situations in PCM, then in the last week it looks like Dean Andrews is going to talk to us about economics or something.

Mulvihill is the best! I did research with him summer 2005. He's a quality man, and he is probably the smartest person I've ever met.

Ah, my interview is in a few days (the 30th). I'm so excited! I'm so ready to get it on & get it over with... and hopefully see a BIG RED ENVELOPE in my mailbox a week later.

Good luck to everyone else interviewing this week! :luck:

This isn't specific to OU or anything, but it seemed as good a place as any to post it.

Does anyone know a good resource that tells your how long of a residency to expect for a given specialty? I have also discovered that fellowships are optional... what is the benefit of taking on a fellowship when you are already in say, a cardio-thoracic surgery residency?

I'm a non-traditional student to begin with, and I am fairly certain that I will want to specialize. I am just trying to get a better time frame to when I may actually begin to practice.

Oh, one more thing, what is the definition of an attending? Obviously, it is the doctor in charge of a patient, but is that always going to be someone who has completed their residency? Will that include a fellow?

I am positive this is posted somewhere in this forum, but all of my searches yielded far too much information.

Careers in Medicine is a good starting place for very general information regarding specialties. If you're looking for specifics, though, check out the search engine on FREIDA.

As for why specialize? Salary and marketability are the big reasons off the top of my head. You'll be able to make much more money as a specialized physician than you will as a generalist. You'll also have access to more/better job opportunities. Keep in mind that you don't need a specialty to be a generalist, but you can not practice a specialty as a generalist.

As for what to do after a CT Surgery residency...? I dunno. Probably just go practice, would be my advice. 😉

CT surgery actually requires two residencies - 5 years of surgery plus 2-3 years of CT surgery. I didn't spot a fellowship on FREIDA specifically for CT surgeons, but I don't doubt there are options out there featuring maybe transplantations...?

Hey current students.. do I need to worry about purchasing a stethoscope before next year or does someone come to the school to talk/offer a discount on them? Perhaps I don't need one that early?

Don't worry about it. Last couple years (maybe more?) the alumni association bought stethoscopes for first years (Littman Classic II SE). You should at least wait until then. Spend the money on whatever vice you may have.

Wow, awesome! Thanks.

This is not always true. Salaries vary greatly among the internal medicine subspecialties with those that involve procedures (cards, GI) being more lucrative (and thus more competative). If you look at ID or endocrinology, the work and compensation are very similar to that of an internist. Also, at the last anesthesiology interest group meeting I went to, the PGY-4 said pretty bluntly that fellowships (even in pain) in anesthesiology were simply not worth it.

On the topic of more/better job opportunities, I have heard many grumblings to the contrary specifically in CT surgery, namely that invasive cards and interventional rads are decreasing the demand for CT surgeons. One of my past students is a perfusionist now and claims that many a CT fellowship goes unfilled nowadays, and two of the general surgery residents I know at OU told me that they were planning on CT when they started but decided to just stay general due to lack of demand. This makes sense practically. If you can stent an artery before an MI, you circumvent the need for a bypass.

I think that the take home point is that we are unable to make decisions about specialties so far in advance. Technology, insurance reimbursement, and overall buzz during the final year of med school coupled with actual rotation experience during the third year will be what points us in whatever direction we ultimately choose.

Yeah there are a bunch of threads on the allo page about stethoscopes. Even if you prefer a Littmann Master model (like I do), I'd keep the one that they give you for testing purposes. That way you can just flip the diaphragm around like you're supposed to instead of pausing to tell the examiner that you're pushing down (as in the Master). Most agree that the more expensive models are unnecessary for students.

Anyone else think it is b.s. that the weather is 60 degrees on Wednesday and then drops to 30 degrees on Thursday? 👎 Let me tell you how not excited about that I am. I'm generally not a fan of the cold, so I'd probably be annoyed about it either way, but to have that be an interview day? Boo hiss. I guess I'll have to snuggle up with the other pre-meds for warmth :meanie: .

No me gusta el frio.

Maybe it will snow and I can make a Dr. Snowman & impress the hell out of the adcom? 👍
Or not.

*Edit* My mom noticed the weather for my interview date & sent me an email to remind me to wear my coat... awww, thanks mom! What's really funny about that is that I was considering not wearing one just because it makes my suit outfit not look as nice. At least I got a flu shot today, so I'm not totally braindead...

Yep, that sucks, especially since most younger people in this part of the country don't have nice outerwear. It seems crazy since it's nearly 70 outside today.

So where the hell are our biochem grades or at least the answer sheet? 😡

In gossipy news, I've heard that Dean Schmidt wants to get rid of the minis. I'm actually with him on this one, but I seem to be in the minority. My thought is that the block exam system doesn't work when you have minis. You either have a block exam system or you don't. Maybe the first minis had some value just to let us know what tests are going to be like, but I'm all for dumping the ones we just had, especially the biochem one. IMO, it seems like the second mini is used in biochem to get around some bad professors.

We have a pool going in our mod over what it is, PBL-style: we "cast a broad net" and have formed Diff Dx's. Nevermind the fact that PBL is gayer than the absence of a gag reflex...

If it was about the mini's (one I've heard too) why wouldn't Leon get CC'd, why would O'D be party to it, and why would that affect us (who as we've noted, are immune to such nonsense as changing the rules 3/4 into the game)

If it was about the Chung/O'D power struggle, why would we care/be affected?

If it was about off-color jokes made that may offend 1 or 2 people, why would they have to get all of us involved / why would McNeil not be CC'd?

And so on...

I vote for academic dishonesty on the mini practical; given the format of it, it would have been simple.

Barring that, the other one I've heard is a certain mod partaking in a little of Grandpa's cough syrup. At school. 🙄 Which, although not the brightest idea, may not be "against the rules", as we aren't a dry campus, hence happy hour at the union. But unless Gross was the class they went to "diminished", I don't know why that'd matter to KC or O'D. Or why you couldn't just handle it individually...

exlaw, I LOVE Mitch!! I saw him a few times on CC but never knew his name, then I heard it on the radio like a year later...so I went looking for his next close show. ****!! False advertising, all I found were memorial sites...

"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it..."

"No, I don't need a receipt for my donut..."

Yeah, this is my vote, too. Ahh, medical school excitement. 🙂

We saw Mitch live about a month or two before he died. Unfortunately, he really sucked -- he was so hammered. He was such a funny guy, though.

O'don said today that the meeting was about students breaking the "rules of the lab" he also said that students could be dismissed for it. He would not get into any more detail. I guess we will find out soon enough!

Also very feasible. All that is certain is that whatever it is/was, I didn't do it; my hold on school is tenuous enough without doing something to cause the dean to call everyone on the carpet...

Hmm, that gets to another rumor I heard that the meeting was about people bringing in non-students to the lab. I think O'don is just perpetually irritated with our class.

I don't think he likes us. I think he tolerates us. Except for Rachel's tank. He 😍 's them. Either that or he just feels sorry for you guys and your draw of anatomic models...

All I can say is that he's not my favorite anatomy professor for lots of reasons. He ignores our tank like the plague -- I guess we suck. 🙁 Bleh, I'm not looking forward to a 30 minute rant session probably about nothing. Power trip, anyone?

So, after your big meeting, are you going to make sure to pass to dirty secrets on to us? I mean, since you posted all this on the future 2011'ers... Now I'm curious.

Let me see... about 65 hours left until everything I could possibly do to get into OUCOM for the class of 2011 will be finito! That is such a lovely thought. Then it's a week of checking the mail - the worst is getting freaking Pizza Hut coupons b/c they are big & red... threw me off more than once last year.

I'm actually surprised to hear that... he and McNeil were favorites of our class (in LAB, mind you- not sure anyone can think as fast as fast as O'Don can list off structures in lecture). He was always the first guy I'd try to find, but then again I was mostly terrified of Chung and Dandajena.

Don't stress over the interview. Just be yourself.

Yeah we (actually I'm probably the most responsible culprit) seemed to migrate over here unlike MCW which just kept using their 2010 thread. For what it's worth, I think sharing chats here is valuable because it keeps the 2011 thread toward the top where new hopefuls can find us more easily. It doesn't seem like we've had as much interest from applicants here as last year. I have to say that I didn't find SDN until about four months ago, and I'm kind of an addict now.

Power trip, anyone?

Indeed the dean's email has already served its purpose. Two small paragraphs to the Class of 2010 plus two cc's equals massive buzz, fear, and anxiety as the callow sheep scatter away from the wrath of the almighty shepherd. I'm certainly thinking about Tulsa for MS 3 and 4 more heavily nowadays--far less political.

I don't know about you guys, but I really don't feel like filling out a professionalism survey for Gross. I didn't really see it as being mandatory. As far as I'm concerned, being professional means talking with your group members when you feel that they aren't. Unprofessional would be complaining about them behind their backs.

Furthermore, why does this exercise seem to be centered on anatomy lab? If I am going to be judged by my peers, judge me by how I act in clinical areas.

Alas, do I feel a POEM coming on? Blast these early classes. I am feeling inspired yet the need for sleep is high.

Problems sleeping...

I agree, exlaw. Anatomy, in general, is a better course because it has a more uniform consistency. A preliminary mini worth 5% of our evaluation to get us used to the questions is probably okay with me, and they said that the mini practical is more for the benefit of testing us with an intact head. Hey if nothing else, you at least got to spend 30 minutes of comfortable silence with me??????

Biochem... 40% of evaluation by late September and then "ramp up." Awkward questions later thrown out, lengthy exams with strange distributions of questions per professor, rearranging away from a logical curriculum sequence to force energy metabolsim into the same block as GI anatomy, constant gout reverberation, overdoing the clinical correlations, etc. Yeah not a fan of the biochem minis. I'll stop before I frighten the 11er's. FYI the syllabus is plenty to get you what you need for step 1 so pay my complaining gluteus no mind.

We've all got only one more GA lab left 😀

We've all got only one more GA lab left 😀

I know! Isn't that great. 🙂 I think I'm gonna fail my IMPS quiz today. :scared:

And I was right! Failed the quiz, and I think my group either failed or made a D on our group quiz (hard to tell because we got thrown by those 2 miskeyed answers). So am I doomed to remediating IMPS in the summer?

He seems to be sort of a divisive guy. Some people love him and some us just don't get it. Personally, I love Chung. I love his lectures, his test questions, everything. I think McNeill's been in lab once. One big area for improvement in lab would be to have more professors around and to assign professors to specific tanks. We're in the back of the lab, and it seems like all the professors are always on the other side of the room.

But, yeah, like Johnny pointed out. It's almost over! 🙂

Perfect summary! Yeah, for the class of 2011, you've got to remember that we're nearing the end of the semester, so we're grumpy. 🙂

Congrats to those with interviews this week! Make sure to relax and be reasonable. Good luck and let us know how the interviews go!

Latest rumor--dean wants to eliminate last biochem mini and put that material on the final contrary to Leon's preference.

O'Don is a complex person. Scuttlebutt among PA students is that he likes med students more than them and will rearrange his PA teaching duties around us. His dad is a doc, and we was a basic scientist for ten years before going to PA school in the mid 90's. I like all three of the faculty who come to the lab because I think that they are all interested in student teaching which is often a rarity in medical school basic science departments.

Not sure that I got anything out of the IMPS thing.

How much physics II do you guys use in medical school. I ask because all my school is offering is a blow off teacher that never gives lower than a C and an A is not that hard. Of course, I'll have to study on my own just for education but how much do you guys use especially, the optics stuff.

Thanks

Unless you are interested in radiology, learning physics well enough to succeed on the MCAT is plenty. This is coming from a guy who loves physics and entered college as a physics major.

I'm sure that the average opthamologist is handier with focal points and lenses than myself, but I think most people would agree with me that if your previous numbers were good enough to get you in, then you are as prepared as you need to be as far as the physical sciences and organic chemistry are concerned.

The only physics you need for med school is:
"Drunk guy walks into the street and is hit by a car traveling at a 45 degree angle at 60 mph...
The drunk guy will :
A) Likely be DOA
B) Need some aspirin
C) Need an enema
D) Be a transvestite
E) Develop GOUT

ok...that's actually physics I

For physics II just remember that electricity can be harmful if swallowed....just like..ummm...sorry...you fill in the rest 😉

For those of you who were following our class meeting saga, it was pretty anti-climactic. Basically, RachelD was right, but everything is based on what somebody overheard somewhere. If anybody wants details, you can pm me.

I need to get back into a studying groove -- I spent several hours staring at Chung today but learned about 30 minutes worth of stuff. 😱 Break's coming, though, so all is good!

Wizard and johnny that's what i was hoping.

I just interviewed at OUCOM today. Don't know if I met any of you, but I had a good time, and I think the interview went well.

I keep reading about this big red envelope...exactly how big should I be looking for? Any advice for how to pass the time?

For current MS-I's who don't check the discussion boards as compulsively as I do - Leon cancelled the 10:00 NF project tomorrow due to impending inclement weather. Since he said that Friday's lecture was still on until further notice, I *presume* this means that Dr. Hanas' 8:00 lecture is also cancelled (or it will set new records for low attendance, undoubtedly).

Now, if they just cancel my PCM tomorrow afternoon, I can have a nice study day without having to trudge out into the snow. I've probably jinxed it, though - I stopped at the grocery store tonight so that I'd be all comfy tomorrow if I didn't have to leave the house.

Lord knows, exlaw, I need the time with Chung's. I've tried to keep up with lectures, but I haven't read the entire H&N chapter yet.

Oh, and congrats on a good day, soonereng... I think I interviewed one year ago today exactly (or was it yesterday...). Anyway, traditionally OU gets those envelopes out pretty quickly but, since the process was re-designed this year, don't listen to us because we don't know nuthin' about this year. Good luck! 😀

I've been a mean person recently, but I can't imagine anyone actually driving through 4 to 6 inches of snow to get to school at 8 am for a Hanas lecture. I sure as hell wasn't going to attend regardless of the weather. Of course, I haven't been to biochem since Wiegel's first round. 🙂 I really am hoping they cancel PCM tomorrow. From the looks of it, the roads are still going to be pretty messy by tomorrow afternoon.

I wasn't planning on going either. The Tuesday PCMer's said that they had to take sexual histories on standardized patients. Maybe they will cancel tomorrow for us and reschedule our session for next Tuesday afternoon? I hope not since I am scheduled to work.

Any advice for how to pass the time?

I saw your numbers on the MCAT forum. You are in unless you have Asperger Syndrome. In the meanwhile, ask questions here--lots please. I'm seriously bored, and I pass most of my down time by rambling on incessantly on this forum.

Is this your first interview?

I would say we could hack the .edu and put a pseudo-closure notice up, but since we have to enter our super-top-secret password, that we got a class on how to make, like 6 times just to get into our email, it'd prolly be easier just to go to PCM...

Your envelope will somewhat conspicuous. It'll be regulation size, and crimson as all get out. They won't send a rejection in an 8 x 10.5 magenta one just to **** with your head...I don't think anyway; I never saw one 😉 so they might.

Good luck to all!! Especially those who must battle mother nature tomorrow for their place at the table, for I will be sound asleep, deep in REM and dreaming of glucocorticoid action...

I discovered www.dailymotion.com the other day. You should be able to kill lots of time there.

God knows I have.

Glucowhat? I've got to confess that I haven't looked at biochem since the mini. Perhaps I should do that soon. :scared:

Definitely, good luck to those of you who are interviewing tomorrow. I'm sort of wondering how that's going to work, though, since the interviewers might have trouble getting in. It's nothing huge, though, because if things go awry, they'll fix it for you all.

One hint for tomorrow -- there are tunnels that connect all the buildings in the school. I'm guessing you're supposed to park in the conference parking, which is right off the O lot. From there, go to the student union (easy to spot because it has a volleyball court and tables behind it) and take the elevator to the basement. They'll be signs in the basement directing you to to a tunnel to the library, which is where you meet, right? That at least will save you some time outside and reduce your risk of slipping on the ice.

Does the university provide any gloves/scrubs/lab coats/scalpels & probes/ect for GA or is the student responsible for providing their own?

Also - how does the 8 persons:cadaver set-up work? In my undergrad anatomy course, we had 6 persons:cadaver and that got a bit crowded at times.

You're responsible for your own gloves, lab coats, and dissection supplies.

There are eight people per cadaver, but you're in four-person teams. GA dissection is on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Your four-person group dissects every other lab section. On your non-dissecting days, you go down and demonstrate for your counterparts what you dissected the previous section, then you're free to go. In other words, some weeks you'll dissect on Monday and Friday, but the next week you only have to dissect on a Wednesday. With holidays and other things going on, sometimes the schedule gets a bit funky (It seems like last year my group had two or three Fridays off in a row with test block and OU-Texas weekend, but I could be wrong. That was a long time ago. 😉).

we cut M W F...and alternate group A & B...A monday...B wed....A friday...B monday...etc.

well guys and gals....it's officially sleeting over here at nw 23rd and meridian...oh joy...can't wait to fall on my *ss tomorrow.

unfortunately we have to purchase everything we need for gross anatomy. they even told us to have each mod buy a skull for h&n but i dont know of anyone that has actually done that.

our dissection groups are broken up into 2 groups of 4 and we rotate dissection days. so one group will dissect monday and friday one week and wednesday the second week. now the overzealous pre-med/medical student may think this is a bad setup, but i learn very little in lab so it works well for me. i have heard there is an anatomy elective 4th yr for those students that feel they didnt get enough during ms1.

You see how quickly we respond to q's? Keep 'em coming!

Dissection kit is about $20, but you can get by with one or two per team. For a lab coat, I just use an old one that I've had since undergrad. I intend to throw it away when I'm done with it. Wear something that you don't mind getting stinky. Our cadavers are preserved with a phenol/alcohol mixture.

I can probably hook you up with a box of nitrile gloves if you need 'em. I don't think anyone uses latex.

I will also add that we have multiple dissection videos to look at, and we have 2-3 of our 4 gross anatomy professors roaming the lab while we work. There are some dissections that would be very tough without them. There are also a handful of MS 2 TA's like Antigunner who stop by our body too.

We have one, but we're hiding it from you. 😀 jk

There is another thread in the Allopathic forum asking: "How old were you when you started med school?"....so, that got me wondering how old is everyone who posts on this thread?

I didn't know AG was a TA, which is somewhat of an oxymoron, considering the TA Gross avg. is prolly, oh say 99.5 or so...AG my ass!! 😀

I'm done with my coat WOOO!!!

You know, I didn't buy a kit; I had a small complement of tools already, but it seems like there is more than enough hardware on the east tables to mangle some anatomy...

I used latex for a box, but I doubled up (like you would on a rockin' trauma or some girl you just met) and found I liked the latex better. Your hands still stunk, but they smelled like when you finally opened that rubber you kept in your wallet when you were 14, "just in case". But after a year you're like, "well ****, I guess I'll make a water balloon..." and it reeks like the air inside a basketball... But at least then your hands don't smell as much like the crap in the lab, which to me smells A LOT like cherry Chloraseptic; incidently I don't spray that **** in my mouth anymore...

I'm 28, but I look older and act younger.
