Ugggg... I forgot I could also be deferred.

I wonder what on earth that meeting would be like.

How often do they have them during these interview cycles?
I'm assuming the had one right after my Feb 2nd interview, otherwise how did some people at that interview already get rejected.

I don't think you'll be deferred... they defer people when they are waiting to see the entire group of prospective students. Since you were in the last session of interviews, I doubt that they'd defer you for two weeks so they can look at you on the feb 19 meeting. So, I think you'll be waiting for an acceptance, wait list, or rejection.

Personally, I am expecting to be waitlisted. I really, really don't want to be. So, in order to be on the waitlist for less time, if you aren't going to OU tell them so those of us on the waitlist can get in 🙂 .

Yukon and Mustang have some very nice, affordable houses available. I know in Yukon you can get recent construction, around 1600 sq feet for around 115K or a little less. You can get older, but still quality homes, for less than 100K.

So maybe I'm lacking in the concept of how the loans work, but I'm freaking out about how the hell I'm going to afford living in a one bedroom apartment with my fiance. Maybe I should chill out? 😕

In other news.... 7 & 1/2 days until the meeting of doom... we could call it the M.D, meeting... haha, get it? :meanie:

Random thought, I have been planning on retaking the MCAT in April if I am rejected or waitlisted, that way if I don't get off the waitlist I will be able to improve my MCAT for the next year. Then all of a sudden it occurred to me that maybe I should just wait to take it in August so I can maybe get off the waitlist first & not have to retake. Since OU doesn't take into account who finishes their app's first, this sounds like a good plan. What do ya'll think? I am so vehemently opposed to retaking the MCAT. I have tried to start studying for it, but I haven't. Another reason why retaking in August would be better than April since I started studying for the last April mcat in November and it's now middle of Feb w/no studying.

Opinions, fellow wanna-bes?

I think that's a good idea. I'm planning the same thing.

I wouldn't worry about financial aid too much. I think they do a pretty good job of making sure we are all OK money wise. For an instate MS-1 last year the financial aid budget was about $42,000. Tuition and fees and all that was about $17,000. That left about $25,000 for living expenses. You should get some detailed info on the financial aid package in one of the mailings this summer.

For those of us who are deferred

The final meeting will be held:
Sunday, February 19, 2006
1:00 pm
East Lecture Hall
Basic Sciences Building
941 Stanton L. Young Blvd.

I also found out from Dotty in admissions that they have accepted 143 students and deferred 107. They will fill the class to 162, select a wait list, and all others will be rejected.

That means they will accept 19 more and they usually take 30-40 applicants from the waitlist each year. So we have a 45-55% chance of being accepted.

Good luck everyone :luck:

Thanks for all this information - good to have while I bite my nails and check the mailbox again (now worried my rejection was delayed in the mail - yep, i'm going nutso).

Just found this info in a picture from Family Day last fall.

Class of 2009
62% male - 38% female
49 Colleges and Universities represented
33 Majors represented
Undergraduate GPA - 3.68
Average MCAT - 9.64
Ages range from 19 to... (over 40)

Thanks!! I guess I was worried I'd be a freak for starting this process at 30. All that was clarified to not be an issue on my interview day - everyone was freaky!! Joking, of course ;-) People were loverly and I'm sure they'd be friendly even to little ole me!

The way I understand it is that only about 5 or so new spots were added.
I think that formerly the new admitted students totaled about 150, and about five spots were added for the class of 2009 and about 5 or 6 people had to
repeat 1st year making the total number = 160.

I'm trolling (is that a word?) through old posts trying to find the answer to "Will I get in?" Not finding it, but I have some answers to a few of these questions after my interview.

I asked about this bc I was wondering if the resources of OU would be stretched if they keep adding more seats etc. BUT, it turns out the class was around 170 say 15-20 years ago (this is my guesstimate as one of my interviewers was at OU when the class was bigger). They let the class size decrease to 140-ish because the economy was booming and the quality of the applicant pool went down a bit.

I thought that said a great deal for the standard of doctors they are committed to training. I hope people at OU realize that they are really chosen because they are qualified and not because the school needs to fill seats 🙂

Now let's hope they put me in one of the shiny new empty spots!

Hmmm did that make anyone feel better? Cuz it sure didn't make me feel better. :barf: All I want to do is curl up under the covers until August. They need to create a smiley that is shooting itself in the head.

So, if they interviewed about 270 people - accepted 143 and have 107 still to go...have they only sent 20 non-acceptance letters to people they have interviewed? Why am I thinking of this?? I realize it doesn't matter, but yep, I am ready to hide until August - will keep my eye out for anxious-insane icon.

If one does get waitlisted, does anyone have thoughts on sending more letters of support? I know that's ok to do with other schools, but don't want to annoy.

Letters of support ring most sincere when accompanied by substantial cash enclosures. Unfortunately, it rings of impropriety for the school to directly accept what might erroneously be interpreted as, dare I say, a bribe, from would-be matriculants. To quell such fears on all those involved, I cast all caution aside, and altruisticly offer myself up as a intermediary to accept such tokens and then pass on the good word to the higher-ups that be, ensuring that not one dirty red cent makes its way to anyone affiliated with the admission process. Yes, I would do that for you, but only because I love you guys. And if you order right now, I'll knock off one payment and throw in some free steak knives.

PM me for the location which to address your financial "encouragements" to.

Yours in selfless service.

Are there any other OK State students that have been accepted on the board? Also, at what point should my FAFSA be sent in?

You mean, any other Cowboys? You bet. (I may not be who you meant, though, that was a long time ago.) I remain a very loyal Stillwater alumnus - but, for the study of medicine, I chose OU - so, now I'm a very proud (and very happy and very grateful) Sooner. At least I will never again have to wear an orange and black hood (with a gold stripe for M.S., no less) for graduation - I distinctly recall looking like some tropical bumble bee.

OU "strongly recommends" that you have your FAFSA filed by March 1 for "full" consideration for all available funds. I've been trying to get to it for the last three weeks, but biochem is taking all the time I have when I'm not earning a living. It'll be in before the end of the month one way or another.

Jwax and all - I'll have my fingers crossed for you this weekend.

what is the school code for OU that FAFSA requires?

tsthethird said:

OUHSC's FAFSA code is 005889. You should file your FAFSA as soon as you have your tax information. At least by March 1st, anyway. Some scholarships are on a first-come first-served basis, as far as I know, so you want to get your info in as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, the folks in Financial Aid have always been very helpful for me. They can be reached at 405-271-2118.

'Nuther Poke here, for a few more months anyway. I know of a few more, but don't know if they get on SDN or not.

My mom got me a big-ass coffee mug emblazoned with OU Sooners, and she was saying she almost felt like she was doing something illegal (both parents are K-Staters...wife and I are both O-Staters) I bought a hat at Hibbett's which is the only article that doesn't qualify "Oklahoma" or "OU" by saying "medicine" as well. It's like joining the dark side...

I hear ya, Mr. Freeze. I figured it was time to take the Sooner plunge, so I went over to Big Red Sales in Tulsa. I walked around the store in a bit of a daze and when the clerk asked me if I needed help, I just said "no... no, I'm not quite ready for this yet!"

Where can you get stuff with "OU Medicine" on it? Big Red Sales certainly doesn't have anything like that - I imagine Ratcliffe's does, but I haven't made it down to the Health Sciences Center when they were open.

There will be T-shirts and whatnot available when it gets closer to August.

Our class will also be selling shorts and possible other stuff as we get closer to Spring Break. If you're interested, I'll post when we have more details.

Will the school be selling acceptances? Because that would be nice...

Sure, let us know. I'd be happy to start supporting my school early. This beats the heck out having to buy Girl Scout cookies at the office from at least 4 different ladies with daughters in order to avoid hurt feelings.

My wife got me a shirt, a sticker, and a sweatshirt, all presumably from Ratcliffes. I drug her in there one day when we were in the city, otherwise she wouldn't have known where to find that sort of stuff. I had to get something to sport in Stillwater! I finally washed 'em the other day. You know how when you're little and you get something cool for your birthday, and you're all like man, I'm wearing this **** EVERYWHERE!

You could go to the final meeting tomorrow and hand out $20 bills to all the people on the committee. Hey, I just might do that myself

Hmmm I'll keep that in mind. Are you actually going to the meeting? Are they going to rank us on acceptances/waitlist/rejections during this open meeting? Because that is ummm odd.

Is anyone brave enough to go to the meeting tomorrow? I don't think I could go by myself but if someone else is going I might meet up with you and go together. I would really like to know why I get rejected if that happens. I can't stand it anymore 😱 My number is 802-3373 if anyone want's to go. MechE, I think you are the only one even considering it. Would it be too weird?

Oh, I wish I were close enough to go! However, not sure if I'd have the guts. If you all do go - please report back!!

I decided I'm going. JohnnyOU told me he might go as well so Rachel if you decide to attend you won't be alone. Nancy in the premed office told me that they refer to us by our AMCAS numbers so make sure you know what yours is.

:luck: :luck: :luck: GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!!!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Ladies and gents, we've been posting on this thread for a long time now - I feel like I've gotten to know you a little bit. You're great applicants - both well-qualified and personable - who would be terrific additions to the Class of 2010. I'll be studying tomorrow because I'm up to my nose in lipids and carbohydrate stereochemistry for a biochem test next week, but I'll be thinking about you during the meeting with my fingers crossed - I admire your courage. GOOD LUCK!!!

I know this is something you don't want to hear about, but if you do get rejected you'll get an invitation to the reapplicants' workshop they have in April. They'll let you know then why you were rejected or waitlisted.

It sucks, but it is worth going.

Well, I’m back from the meeting. I was a little nerve racking and difficult to get any real information, but here’s what I found out:

There were 21 open spots and they filled them with 21 resident applicants. There are two separate waitlists: one for residents and one for non-residents. There are 63 on the resident waitlist and 15 on the non-resident waitlist. When a resident student drops his acceptance a resident will get his spot. If a non-resident withdraws a non-resident will get his spot.

No resident applicants were rejected, but a few non-residents were. They had already decided whom to accept, waitlist and reject and today they were finalizing the list. They referred to applicants by number (i.e. applicant #23) not the AMCAS number as I originally thought, so it was impossible to find out how you really did. The waitlists are ranked; they didn’t move anyone on the resident list around but a few non-residents did get bumped up on their list.

I hope this helps. Good luck everyone :luck: and it was great meeting you RachelD.

Ditto on MechE's comments. Did not really find out much. They had three different lists. A yellow sheet with the 21 they had already deceided to accept and then the resident and non-resident waitlists. It seems like they had the work done before the meeting.
I think the rank on the list depends on your interview scores ie. A (accept) D(deffer) or R (reject). If you got 4 A's ( 3 from your interviewers and one from the committee that meets after your interview) you are in. The more D's and R's you get the lower you are one the list.
The good news is they kept someone on the waitlist with a 5 in the BS section of the mcat. I was kinda shocked by this but his grades were good so they counted it as a "bad test day".
One doc was pre-occupied with Verbal Reasoning scores for a couple of applicants. He seemed to think they could not be successfull with a low verbal score. The applicants he brought up were not moved (their rank) as a result of his comments.
Not much else to say. Dr. Hall did say that they were at 37% female for the accepted class. I'm not sure if that included the 21 they accepted today.
It only lasted 1 1/2 hours so not too bad.
Good luck to everyone. MechE, I hope we can join the other members of the class of 2010! Good luck :luck:
Oh, I looked at the thread from last year and I got my rejection letter on March 2nd, I think the meeting was on Feb 28th. But, I think the university is closed tomorrow so it may be Thursday before us locals hear anything.
Take Care!

good luck, guys! that had to have been a weird experience to be there when they were talking about the applicants. did you get any feel of what factors ou looks at? also, did you ever think they were talking about you? 🙂

They did not discuss me. They actually only talked about maybe 5 or 6 applicants. It was pretty 😴
No new info on what they are looking for in applicants. Just the usual.
I'll be glad when the waiting is all over.

I don't know if the offices are closed tomorrow, but we have class, unfortunately. 😛

Anyone else watch Grey's Anatomy? I want to gouge out Meredith's eyes!

I'm pretty irritated about her sleeping w/George, too. I don't actually like George... I think she should hold out for Dr. McDreamy... or tell Addison to get the hell outta town and leave her man alone. Eh.

Thank God I will not be receiving a rejection letter (I'm a resident). Of course, being #63 on the waitlist would suck, too. I think probably 40 of the 63 will get in eventually.

Why can't college classes cancel for lousy weather? All the high schools around here are closed. Boo for college being hardcore.

Sorry I wasn't able to join you guys. I got "iced in" up in Tulsa from Fri-Mon.
Thanks for the update though.

63 on the res. waitlist seems like a lot to me. I wonder how many will make it off.

If I remember right, over the past few years, they have almost always gone to #20 on the wait list and one year all the way to #30.

Dean Hall said that acceptance letters were being mailed out this afternoon or tomorrow. Be on the look out (i.e. mailbox ritual) and good luck!!!!

I've been working the mailbox ritual since Monday.... or maybe since last week (just in case they decided to send something early). Praying to see red soon.

Same here. 👍

If the letters went out yesterday we should get them today right? (Local mail)
I can't stand it anymore. I'm going to try and go back to sleep till the mail comes around noon.
Let the countdown begin! :scared:
