It's reassuring to know that going through an Ayn Rand phase is still a rite of passage for younger adults (and I do mean that with affection - brings back a lot of fond memories). There are so many cultural references that I don't understand at all (like, Buffy who?) but Atlas Shrugged I can relate to... 🙂

My Summer:
- Backpacked the Islands in South Thailand
- Explored/Hiked Angkor Wat (one of the seven wonders of the world..smuggled back a tiger fang and a fragment of an apsara statue)
- Passed my black belt promotion test in Tae Kwon Do
- About to backpack Europe (Paris to Prague)

Immersing oneself in different cultures is best way to kill ethnocentrism.

You young guns... better be ready! Life will definitely change...

Savor your free time in the summer.

Wow, makes my summer seem like such a waste!

I imagine that some people do go through such a "phase", but I don't think that really applies to me, thank you kindly 🙂 I first read it about six years ago, and recognize its philosophical merit. I'm not a hardcore Randian, but I find it hard to believe that the effect it has had on a few of my attitudes will ever dissipate, as you might expect in a "phase." Certainly my political and economic ideas will change as I grow into this career (and have started to already), but I hope that I will never forget the valuable lessons Ayn Rand taught me about self-worth, any more than I would forget the important ideas of any of the philosophers I've studied.

😴 boring Siam, BORING! 😴

some of us had REAL life accomplishments. While you were off galavanting around the world, I undertook a mindbending task of umbilical lint collection, coupled with a journey of exploration for the perfect toe jam sample. Indiana Jones stuff, you wouldn't understand. 🙂
In any task, I urge you not to be so lazy from now on. Productive use of your time can only better yourself, instead of haphazardly wandering the globe.🙂

Looks like final schedules have been posted... 🙂

Kind of exciting.

If you're really a member of the Class of 2010, pm me with your e-mail address, and I'll send you a copy of the .csv and/or .dba file if you want. 😉

I just got some bad news from the financial aid office today -- apparently, GradPlus loans aren't going to be distributed until mid to late October. If I weren't moving and didn't need to buy a new computer, it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but now I'm a little worried. Anybody know how OU's emergency loans work?

Speaking of money, we can get disability insurance that pays $1k/month through AMA. Here's a link.

Available to students under forty years of age. I don't know if I'm depressed or if I just feel doomed.

I get one every semester 🙂 They're super-easy; you just go to the finaid office after July 15, tell them why you need it, they approve it, and you go pick up $500 from the bursar. The catch is you can't get more than $500 🙁

I'm not sure who this guy is, but I wouldn't get between him and his new computer. Might pull back a bloody stump...he doesn't look right in the head.

In other news, a long time ago somebody was asking about .csv and Mac. O2M (formerly Outlook to Mac) at littlemachines.com will allow you to move Outlook (.csv) calendar information to iCal, for the low price of 10 USD.

Personally, I'm taking my first full length practice mcat since the real one I took in April 2006.. woohoo.

Hey all,

Can all those shots we have to get be done in one day?
(other than the hep B)

I'm having a b*tch of a time getting in to get mine. Whole life
just did a flip on me...don't ask. 👎

thanks
Johnny

I got all my shots in one day... tetanus, mmr (because of a lost record), first hep b, and tb test all at the county health dept. I still need to get my chicken pox titer (hopefully next week).

Thanks for the schedule, Amxcvbcv. 🙂

Edit: Also, I found that google calender works pretty well (you can import csv files), and it could be an alternative for you mac people since it is web based.

Don't you have to get 2 tetanus 4 weeks apart? I have no idea where my childhood records are - I've had my first hep B and I had titers drawn for varicella (which will be positive) and mumps (who knows - maybe I'll need a shot). But they wouldn't give me my tetanus until 2 weeks after the hep B. ????

Thanks for the schedule, Amxcvbcv. Maybe when you have time, you can explain what it means - I didn't think we'd really be in class until five in the afternoon more than a day or two a week from what I've been told - but I don't know how to interpret the schedule yet.

Just need one if you had the 3 childhood DPT, which I had (and had record of 🙂).

I can explain that for you. The most you'll be in class until 5 is 3 days a week. The way it works is, see all those gross anatomy labs? You only do 1/2 of those. Eight people work on one body, but only four at a time. So every other lab session you'll be working on the cadaver, and the other sessions, the other group of four will work on it. At the beginning of every lab session, the group of four that dissected last time will demonstrate what they learned to the other group (5-15 minutes), then they'll go home and the other group will take over. So you'll either be dissecting Monday and Friday or Wednesday on any given week (so you alternate dissecting one or two days per week).

You will also only go to 1/2 the PCM sessions. At the beginning of the semester, you'll be assigned to either Tuesday or Thursday PCM. So whichever day you don't have PCM, that's your downtime. So, the most you'll ever be in class until 5 would be if it was your M/F Anatomy week, plus your one PCM session, so 3 times. You will also occasionally get to leave anatomy and PCM early, but not too often (if you make a habit out of leaving Gross lab early, Dr. Chung will decide that you're not allowed to leave lab until you can demonstrate to his satisfaction that you've completed the lab-- and believe me, you don't want that.)

Hope that helps-- let me know if I just confused you 🙂

Just what I was looking for - thanks for taking time for this! 🙂

Cool 🙂 One more thing about anatomy labs-- as far as scheduling vacations and whatnot, don't freak out if you're scheduled to dissect on a day you need to be gone. Unless your lab group is full of douches (unlikely), you can usually get somebody to trade with you if you need to be gone on a particular day. You can't make a habit of actually MISSING labs (Chung and O'Don will notice), but trading every once in awhile is definitely kosher.

We got e-mail today from Student Services regarding tuition for the 2006-2007 academic year. I'm not sure if you guys get this stuff yet or not, so here are the numbers.

MS1 & 2
Resident: $17977
Non-resident: $40507

MS3 & 4
Resident: $18889.25
Non-resident: $41419.25

Now, everyone go put together a budget! 😉

Thanks for the schedule Amx! This is really coming up fast. I imported this to Google calendar (thanks for the tip wantobeadoc). Right now I'm setting up the Google calendar to send me a text message the day before clinical correlations so that I remember to dress up. Wow, I have too much time on my hands.

You won't have to dress up for all of the clinical correlations (unless you want to). Usually that's only required if an actual patient is going to be present. Most biochem CC's are done this way, but most of the anatomy ones don't have patients.

Ah, good to know. I hate dressing up.

They'll outline it all for you at orientation, but I'll say this now. They do want you to wear your white coat for the clinical correlations, but you only have to dress nice if there's a patient there, as antigunner said.

If someone has a financial aid award letter handy, could you please tell me how much we are supposed to get in Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans? For some reason I think I was packaged for the wrong college considering I don't even have enough money to cover tuition and fees with the current award letter.

Also how big of a problem is it if I have yet to get an award letter, thus leading me to not even having picked a lender yet? Thanks for the help.

The maximum you can get for Stafford loans is 30000 for unsubsidized and 8500 for subsidized, which is not enough to cover everything if you are not an Oklahoma resident. I have to get a small additional loan to cover everything. I would give the financial aid office a call to check on the status of your award letter - I think you'll want to get that taken care of pretty quickly.

Now I remember why being a non-resident sucks 🙄

I'm with you on that one. 🙁 I'm going to try to appeal next year for instate status, but it'll be iffy.

WIJG, good luck on your wedding! I'm sure it will be fantastic.

Jwax, I'm feeling for you with those practice MCATs. They're a great studying tool, but my Kaplan summer was certainly not the best summer of my life. I'm crossing my fingers that you'll get some good news before you have to take the actual test.

DH and I have been doing our farewell to Oregon tour. We went backpacking and got lost, which was super scary. The moral of the story is never go off the freaking trail even if you hit a patch where it's covered with six feet of snow. We also went to Crater Lake, which was about the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. If you're ever in the northwest, you've got to check it out. Next week, we're hitting the beach, and then we're moving.

Good luck... I tried that and they said that I failed to sufficiently "prove" that I intended to stay in Oklahoma after completing school. I'm not sure exactly how I would go about doing that 👎

lfesiam-

i tried to pm you, but your mailbox is full and it wont let me. any chance you are going to be in paris around the middle of next week?

I think I am officially giving up all actual hope that I will be a part of the 2010 class. 🙁 To make an attempt at optimism, I will begin with fresh hope for the class of 2011! I hope everything works out excellently for all of you; I'm sure you will all get through the next ____ (4? 8? etc?) years of medical education just fine. Good luck to all. :luck:

Haven't been on here in a while, but just wanted to let everyone know that most of our usmle step 1 scores came in this wednesday. Of the scores that I've heard for sure-262, 244, 231, 225. I'll try to remember to post class stats, etc. when they come in if I can remember.

262... nice.

I'd love to be in his/her shoes this time next year. 😛

I'd really like to know about our class grades compare with last year's class. They had a buttload of 99's and 95+ scores.

Btw, has OUdoc given you guys/gals some tips for the 2nd year and boards? I've got tons of advice after studying for/ taking boards if anybody wants to hear it.

well, let's here them...any insight would be appreciated!

I haven't heard anything recently... post it here for all or on one of the discussion boards. 🙂

Do you guys do anything for second years like we (and you, I guess) put together the unofficial guide for first year?

Yeah, you should be getting a guide, but it won't be published. It'll probably be a word file. My advice:

1. Kick the crap out of IHI-make it a priority.
2. Buy BRS path early and study along with it.<-It's great for boards and will help you on the year long comprehensive final.
3. Utilize the tables for IHI on the study aid board and make your own.
3. Buy First Aid and study it with every class early.
4. Buy Q bank and do every question, and when you're done with them....redo all of the ones that you missed.
5. For pharm....use flashcards extensively along with the syllabus.
6. Study systems (phys, anatomy, embryo, biochem, etc) along with the systems in IHI.
7. You're going to feel like a ***** most of the time, but it's okay 'cause everybody else does too.
8. Don't kill yourself studying, but don't put yourself into a situation where you have to catch up (especially early). At least for me, catching up it nearly impossible once I get behind.
9. Don't let IHI fool you 'cause it's easy early (first two weeks or so) then it gets a lot harder.
10. Pharm is easy in the fall, much harder in the spring. Get yourself some cushion early.
11. HBII exam one is easy. Exam two is written in binary code.
12. Use the flashcards for MMI along with the syllabus, both will help you. Chunk the notegroups.
13. A great way to study for IHI is to cut notegroups and paste to note panes in the powerpoint.
14. Everyone will tell you to read Robbins for IHI. I didn't read it at all. Kaufman, Porth, BRS, and notegroups.
15. If Holliman is teaching in IHI, memorize his syllabus.
16. The books I read for boards:
First Aid 2006
BRS Path
BRS Phys
BRS Immuno, micro
Road Map for USMLE Pharm
High Yield Human Behavior (also contains some epi)
High Yield Embryo
High Yield Anatomy
High Yeild Biochem
17. Something I wish I had done earlier = read the above books with the corresponding course
18. My USMLE had a lot of epi and biochem so you should be prepared for those
19. Watch out for PCM exam 2, it's a lot tougher than the first and third.

I can probably keep going, but that should be enough for the time being. Enjoy your summer and don't let the second year beat you down. Good luck :luck:

Quick question: I see that the 2007 edition of First Aid won't be out until mid December. Should I wait and get it, or just use 2006?

How much does the Step 1 exam change year to year? I can't imagine the material being that different.

I know a lot of people who studied with 2005 or 2004. They're not much different as far as content goes, but >2006 is systems based (which I prefer) while <2006 is subject based.

Serious newbie question... are contact lenses discouraged or prohibited in anatomy lab? I normally only wear eyeglasses in order to get from bed to the sink... and my glasses are so ratty that I wouldn't wear 'em in public. I do need to get a new pair, but I'm trying to decide whether or not I need to make that a priority before anatomy lab starts. Thanks!

I'm fairly certain that contact lenses are a no no.
