Let me know if you guys have any questions in regards to the new curriculum or anything.

Could you just give a rundown of the curriculum, how it changed, and what your opinions are? That would be a awesome! Thanks in advance
I can't comment on the previous curriculum but I'll give a brief rundown of what we have right now

Fall first year you do a bunch of basic sciences (Biochem, Embryo, Genetics, Molecular, Histo, Cell, Immuno, Micro, Pharm). Class 2019 took them in blocks where one class would end before the next began, thus you only have one class to focus on at a time. Class 2020 has them staggered where your tests are more spread out and you've got lectures for one class while you're trying to study for a test in the other. Hopefully class 2021 goes back to the block schedule because the staggered absolutely sucks. We're pushing hard for this. You have anatomy with cadaver dissection, Developing the physician and OMM. Tests are on Mondays and you have very few weeks without a test.

Second semester first year and all of second year you do systems. Tests are usually every other week and you don't have anatomy to deal with. You still have OMM and developing the physician (until spring second year) and they add a clinical skills class.

My opinion - the curriculum is better than a lot of schools. Some schools like KCU hit all systems twice, giving you more exposure to the material but they blitz you so hard that you have no time for research or sleep or breathing. Other schools like DMU force you through a full year of the useless garbage that is basic sciences. Almost none of that is on boards and I would die if I was stuck in essentially undergraduate classes a full year. I'm also glad anatomy is only 1 semester because I hate it and it's a huge time suck. We only have 2 hours of OMM lab per week and we are almost always out 30 minutes early. Some schools have like 3-4 hours.

Spring second year the courses gradually drop off and you have about 3 months of board prep time with little else going on.

It used to be strictly block scheduling. You would have bmf1, followed by bmf2 etc. of course you would also have anatomy, omm and DTP overlapping those too. Now we still have those three classes overlapping but we are also on an overlapping block schedule. We do two bmf courses at a time. For example, BMF 1 and 2 started at the same time. Once bmf 1 was over we started bmf 3. So bmf 2and 3 were overlapping. So one week we have a test in bmf1, the next bmf 2, then bmf1 again and then anatomy. I honestly hate it and so do many of my classmates. It makes it very frustrating because once you've studied for one test and have it done you have to completely refocus on the other class. Then after that you have to try to remember what was on the previous bmf1 test for the upcoming one, if that makes sense.

The reason they did this, according to them, is to help build these concepts into long term memory. Which would probably work if we didn't have to deal with omm, anatomy, and DTP at the same time but we do have to deal with those classes too. So it's impossible to do that. It's very frustrating and I wish they would just go back to normal block schedules. they don't do this to us once we get to systems though. I cannot wait for this semester to be done.
End rant.

Couldn't agree more. 7 weeks and 2 days to go.

OSU is an amazing school. The new Tandy building is going to be AWESOME!

This was very helpful! I hope they go back to the strict block scheduling. Is there any advise you have for someone who is nervous about the transition to medical school? I will be fresh out of undergrad and excited about this opportunity, but I am also nervous since it is such a huge step in my life.

Learn what works for you and stick with it. I'm typically 10 points above average in bmfs and 15-20 in anatomy. I've never had a family member that was a doctor or known many people that went through Med school. I stick to myself and don't let anyone else tell me how to do it. You'll hear lots of advice, listen to the stuff you think will work for you. You don't want to get lost by trying a million things that won't work. Also getting in a good routine early on is very helpful. Another thing, find out if going to class is beneficial for you. It's not for me but is for others.

I don't either, my mom is a registered nurse and my dad is a farmer. I grew up in a very small town and it's a wonder I have even made it to this point. Thanks for the advice!

Take anatomy before you get here if you can. Makes your life easy (which boosts class rank if you are a gunner and care about that stuff like @Dr. Death 😉 )
