Hey All,

Currently deciding between Wake Forest and Oklahoma. Oklahoma gave me in state and Wake is (as of right now, theoretically may be some aid coming on the 15th) full price. I had my second look at Wake and I really loved it, second look at OU is this weekend. I have heard/seen some concerning things about OU and their curriculum changes, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about either of these programs and wanted to weigh in. My heart loves Wake but its hard to justify it for that much more as things stand. I'm interested in surgery btw, so if anyone knows anything about either of these surgery departments, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Good problem to have. I know folks on the OU WL and they are basically figuring it won't be moving really. OU seems like it will be new in a lot of ways but FYI - Wake Forest has a second campus now with a completely new style curriculum as well (like OU just ushered in suddenly after getting new admins and big money from the state), so be aware that you could end up with the same kind of new OK curriculum for a lot more money and be in a legit completely new set up if Wake Forest assigns you to the new location. How big is the tuition difference? How do you feel about NC vs OK - presumably you're from neither?

Idk why there has been so much negativity around OU's curriculum. I also attended OU admitted students day and later asked for the powerpoint they went over to be emailed to me so I could look through it. It seems very exciting the way they are moving with their curriculum, more towards the cutting edge schools that are proving to provide a better performance overall on STEP 2. It's scary because it's new, but I personally feel it's going to be a good thing in the long run. One of my friends also committed to Wake, not sure about their curriculum but she was a great student so I'm sure it's good as well.

I loved Wake, thought the curriculum was good, and matched competitively into a surgical subspecialty. With all that said, there is no tangible advantage that Wake would provide you over Oklahoma. Both have solid in-house residency programs in almost all specialties and subs. Curriculums don’t really matter because med students use third party resources (uworld, sketchy, pathoma) for most of their learning/board prep anyways. I would choose the cheaper of the two.
