The president of OSU has provided the funding that we have been needing to do away with terminal surgeries. We will still be doing live surgeries, but now the dogs will come from local animal shelters and returned their after they have been spayed or neutered. The school has been wanting to do this for a long time, but didn't have the funds before. I guess having his school's name tainted was enough incentive to make OSU's president find the funding.
I think the timing of it makes the vet school look bad. Almost like saying that the previous policy was wrong but we didn't want to change it until it was brought to the public's attention. I still don't think there's anything wrong with the previous way of doing it, I think that this is just an improvement (hopefully) that we were only prevent from doing because of restricted funding. And the change is not coming, at least directly, from the public light on the issue but rather because we are now given the opportunity that we didn't have before. It'll be interesting to see if this change has any impact on other vet school's that use terminal surgeries.
