Seriously...I knew people stole steths in hospitals and such...but...

I just drove up to Buffalo to move in some more stuff, and I leave my stuff near the elevator since I was unloading my car myself, then I go to park my car and was gonna be back in like 1 minute...

Instead someone is parked in my spot, so I have to go park down the street. By the time I get back (like 4 minutes later) someone has stolen my stethescope.

Did they steal my Nintendo DS? No. Did they steal my projector? No...did they steal ANYTHING a normal person would steal? No.

Instead, someone had OPENED my Welch Allyn box, and taken the stethescope out. Wtf?

Worst thing is that I had all my stuff RIGHT IN FRONT OF A SECURITY CAMERA in my building...who the hell steals right in front of a camera? And I saw someone driving away right as I was getting back (this was like 1AM so not a lot of people drive in and out of my building)...

Gonna go ask to see the security recording tommorrow so I can verify if it's the person I saw drive away. Then I shall go have a word with this young fellow...grr.

So angry right now. Seriously I can't believe a tenant of my own building stole my steth...wtf.

P.S. if anybody sees a burgandy welch allyn harvey tycos elite show up on ebay sans box/cd/pediatrics kit/name tag kit and it's from the Buffalo, NY area lemme know so I can buy it and see if it's someone in my building selling it. lol

Bummer. Fortunately you don't really need a stethoscope much for first year.

Yeah, $150+ down the drain! 🙁

Depending on your particular school/program, having a stethoscope may be very handy to have if you have a lot of clinical experience built-in early on. Like many things, it depends on how your school schedules things. I know that at my school it is recommended to have one early on, whereas at some schools you won't touch a patient until much later.

Sorry dude, that sucks! People steal the weirdest stuff. I've had two lawnmowers stolen. Seriously, who steals a lawnmower?

The clinical experience earliest on in med school mostly involves taking histories and talking to patients. Most places actually add the physical diagnosis stuff later (once you actually start learning about diseases).

Definitely depends on the school . . . we started doing physical exams, including heart, lung, and abdominal exams, during the first few weeks of school. I use mine all the time.

OP . . . people suck. I'm sorry 🙁

Hmm.... seems like they need LoJack for stethoscopes.

Or just get a dozen of those $10 cheapo ones for the price of your W-A. That way if someone steals one, (1) they'd have to be really deparate, and (2) you still have a bunch more at home. They still work and you probably weren't going to pick up the subtle stuff as a student anyhow.

And this is why you never leave your stuff unattended, even for 5 minutes. I'm always shocked when people leave computers and whatnot in the library. Sucks though, I hope you get it back.

Nobody would have stolen my laptop. If they had, it would have been a minor loss on my part - all the files I needed were on my jump drive or home computer anyways.

I don't leave my iPod unattended though.

Get a security cable for when you leave your laptop for 5 minutes. They are relatively cheap and useful if you secure them correctly. Or better yet, take the laptop with you when you leave (like to goto the bathroom).

Or have someone you are with watch it for you if you are with people. Surprisingly, when i've left things unattended no one has ever stolen them. I don't think that's as big an issue for me at USF campus. I think the location of a random apt building seems to be more likely a place for something to get stolen then the library where a lot of people are around. Granted that I've had friends who've had things stolen I've never had that misfortune.

That is odd that they didn't steal your other stuff but stole the stethescope.

Is this a new, dual-use medical instrument? The marriage of a stethoscope and a scalpel = stethescopel?!:idea::idea:

Sorry, I couldn't resist! 🙂 :meanie:

Ha... I do the same thing... I can feel fine about leaving my computer out along with my books and bag... but I feel the need to make sure I put my ipod in my pocket even when going ten feet away to look for answers between a bookshelf

Sorry didn't notice the typo. I went back and fixed it but you are tooooooooooo funny!!!You have an awesome sense of humor in case no one has ever told you that I thought I should.

This is what my friend had for her laptop. It worked wonders when she was working in the computer lab on campus.

Oh yeah, hope you find your steth...I went to UB and I could have told you not to leave anything unattended at or around the south campus (assuming thats where you are gonna live). Good luck

Speaking of theft and iPods, anyone see the dateline NBC special- "iJacked" to catch an iPod Thief? "To catch a predator" shows weren't saucy enough I guess, so they had to spice things up with a lil' diversity.

Apparently, Apple is now implementing an anti-theft feature in new iPods, where if the stolen iPod is synchronized with a computer with a different iTunes account, the iPod becomes unusable, or something along those lines...

Was that suppose to be funny? Im not (Deleted)but I find that a bit ignorant.

Yes, it was. It's all in good fun, even if it does offend some sensibilities.

I'm all for equal good fun, so someone should now make fun of the Irish / Swedish / any other ethnicity I am.

I hope they get to the bottom of this matter - and that guy gets arrested and punished appropriately.

If I lived anywhere near you I could give you a spare scope. But I'm over a thousand miles away.😳

Am I a bad person for laughing at that comment?? 😛

It is not funny, it is clearly offensive...

OP sorry about your stethoscope.

It was funny as a one-liner, completly out of the blue. Yes, it's racist, but it was still funny, while at the same time realizing it was a stereotype. I'll let sleeping dogs lie, because it was funny to me (the op), that one word answer. It actualy was an (deleted). Best place apparntly to buy a lawn mower is a pawn shop, that's where I got mine back from. Stethoscope, don't know.

Funny? funny to whom?

Until you don't survey all mexicans and get a 51% of them who find it funny, calling mexicans lawn mower thieves [even if meant in fun] ain't funny

This is a extremely inappropriate comment. But rather than complain and argue the racism behind your statement, I ask you to think about what triggered that statement. Is it an experience you had, a TV show you saw, or perhaps a news piece? Ask yourself what triggered the connection between theft and a specific race.

Then ask yourself what that means for when you walk into an exam room to a patient of that race. How does having preconceived notions about your patient affect the way you hear their story and treat them?

Please consider the conscious and subconscious ways you speak, think, and behave, and don't forget that it strongly affects patient care.

Take a chill pill. Listen I highly doubt they were accusing every single Mexican of being a lawnmower thief.

In fact, its highly unlikely they seriously believe Mexicans to be lawnmower thieves. They probably were just joking by answering that because of the number of Mexicans who are in the yard work business. I know my family's always had Mexican yard people taking care of their gigantic lawn and I suppose I didn't take the person's comment to be serious because I highly doubt they were being serious.

This is what is wrong with SDN. Everyone always gets on the defensive even when the person doesn't necessarily mean it in any serious judgemental way.

The comment made me laugh because it reminded me of the number of mexican yard workers we've always had. But do be clear aboout one thing: I am hardly accusing Mexicans of being thieves. God knows I've had a couple of very good Mexican friends in the past so I'd hardly be the one to do that.

It is the Mexican'ts you worry about.

No. But there are some people here who apparently take themselves so seriously that they've lost their sense of humor.
