Hello, I know these threads have been posted a million times but I truly feel as if my situation may be a little different so I will cut straight to the chase:

- 3rd year dental student
- Top 30% - (I think I can get to top 25% because I am doing well this year)
- Have not taken CBSE but have signed up and began studying for the exam in Feb. 2020

Negatives about me:

- Failed 1st year (due to failures in multiple classes and had to remediate the whole year)
- I am not involved in any extracurriculars such as research, clubs, etc. I am a member of ASDA but rarely attend meetings. I have wanted to join our OMFS society for a while now, but I am kind of embarrassed because of what happened to me first year

Positives about me:

- My complete turn-around after 1st year?
- Grades mostly A's and a few B's (if this counts for anything
- I made an A in gross anatomy and served as a tutor last year
- I am hardworking, humble, optimistic and will do whatever it takes to reach this goal even if it means doing a couple internship years after studying for the CBSE.

I understand the repeating first year is a huge red flag. I just would really like to know the communities responses because I truly appreciate them, thank you.

Kill the CBSE and you should have a chance like anyone else. Score low and I’d guess you won’t have great chances unless you do an internship.

How did you end up top 30% despite failing your first year?
Same question. I thought if you failed a course then C is the highest grade you can get after remediation?

It’s great to be optimistic, but you also have to be realistic. There are more than enough qualified people to fill spots. Even some very well qualified applicants don’t make it. Why would a program take someone with your background when all the other applicants are at the very top of their class and never failed? It’s a ginormous red flag. When directors go through applications they’re looking for a reason to toss the application in the trash, it would be hard for them not to throw yours away.

I know people who have failed a year in dental school, including myself, who have matched into Omfs. Kill the CBSE, that’s all anyone cares about. Don’t listen to haters who cannot relate to your experience.

What score on the exam would you consider to be "killing" the CBSE?

To omfsing,

Since we are on this subject and I do t want to impose on the OP’s thread. Can I PM you?

Thank

I can only speak for myself, I got an 81, and no one even looked at anything else on my transcript. Sure they asked a few questions about what happened, but I got many more interviews than my colleagues who aced dental school but had lower CBSE scores.

I know you can't say for sure but dyk if programs have hard cutoffs for CBSE? Cuz I was only about a couple points shy of 80 and am getting fewer invites than some of my classmates who barely broke 70. I guess I'm just curious what other factors are really important in the selection process other than externships and research.

It’s only early October. Relax, many programs haven’t even hit their deadlines. If you haven’t been getting invites till mid-late Nov then start being concerned.

Hi, I am taking CBSE in February. Is 3 months sufficient to study? What materials would you recommend? It's tough to prepare with dental school.

For me, 3 months would have not been nearly enough! Not even close. But some people manage to do it. It needs to be a full committment - everything else gets put on hold while you're studying (including dental school).

UFAP + Sketchy: Sketchy Micro + Sketchy Pharm + some Path series (either Sketchy or Pathoma) + First Aid + UWorld.

Are you a D2? I'd take February as a run-through, but honestly you're looking at August for your better score.

Thank you! I'm D3, the only reason I'm talking in February is that I want to apply for residency next cycle. I figured out last month after mt oral surgery rotation that, I want to do this. So I am late in the process. You're right, I should aim for August because dental school is intense in 3rd year.

I’ve heard you can still get your app in for next cycle with the August CBSE. Programs know that people are waiting on their scores then. Just what I’ve heard!
