As you all know this is an extremely small field where everyone knows pretty much everyone else (or know someone who does).

I’ve never heard of a case where a resident was terminated, especially during their final year, where it wasn’t warranted (all specialties, not just omfs). Your attendings must have had serious concerns over you. Programs do not want to terminate residents if at all possible. They must have lost all hope in you becoming a competent or ethical provider.

That being said your best bet is to stay in your current program. If you haven’t already done so, find an attorney who can get you reinstated. They can try to prove wrongful termination. Believe it or not, you have a good chance of getting yourself back into your program if you act quickly enough. I know of a resident who was in a dual degree program and was fired in her chief year. She got herself back in by filing a lawsuit. Needless to say, the program had legit concerns over her conduct. And she should have stayed fired.

Thank you for the concern and advice on this situation. I will continue to take the best steps necessary, as I have already done, to doing what’s best for my family. As well as for myself in becoming a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. I continue to seek a position at the PGY5/6 level or a non-categorical spot and encourage any interested program the opportunity to speak with me personally and use their judgment in determining whether or not I am a fit for their program. We do not have the same residency swap type system as with other specialties and as you noted this is a small specialty.

OP my advice still remains the same. Your best bet is to get back into the same program that fired and kicked you out.

Not renewed is the same as being terminated.
For those who don’t know, omfs residents get their contract renewed every year in order to graduate.

If your program didn’t renew your contract, that means they kicked you out. They don’t want you to finish the program.

In order for you to become board certified you need to first graduate from your program. That means you need to get back into the same program. That is the easiest and most direct way. As mentioned previously you have a good chance and there are firms working in this exact area. There is no shame.
