On a side note, is there anyone who knows if you CAN do a gen surg year away from your program? That sounds kinda interesting.
The Australian/New Zealand OMS training program which is overseen by the RACDS allows their trainees to do 1-2 of their training years in another accredited OMS dept if they wish.
The RACDS (OMS) is analogous to the ABOMS.
There are accredited OMS training positions (accredited residency spots) in many hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. The OMS board at the RACDS oversees the structure of the overall OMS training program in both Australia and New Zealand. When you finish your residency training program you then sit for your final exams (Final Fellowship exams of the RACDS (OMS) which is the same as becoming board certified in the US).
Afterwards if you pass these final exams you may use the post-nominals "FRACDS (OMS)"
Example: Gary Bouloux, DDS, MD, MDSc, FRACDS (OMS)
Emory Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Anyways... the RACDS allows Australian and New Zealand OMS residents to apply a year in advance if they desire to do a year in a different OMS dept. For example... If I was based in Sydney and I wanted to get more craniofacial experience I may want to apply to do one of my training years in Melbourne, or if I was in Melbourne and I wanted more H/N experience I might apply to do a year in Sydney... etc. Since all the positions are accredited spots which are standardised... if you are a pgy3, as long as there was an open pgy4 spot where you wanted to go, or if they were willing to do a 1 for 1 switch.. then it works out well.
Aus/NZ OMS training is currently 5-years (not including years spent in medical school which is usually 2.5-3 years).. for a total of 8 years. (btw: didn't UCSF OMS under Pogrel used to be 7-8 years long?)
I think its great that they allow this flexibility in the training program as it allows you to tailor your training a bit and also if your spouse were to get a job somewhere else.. having this option could also help out.
I haven't heard of this sort of flexibility in any of the US programs... It would be interesting to find out if USC is allowing something like this. Keep us updated.
👍
by the way shabu2, how are you enjoying your program?
