Sup y'all! I just found this "jack pot" and I thought I share with everyone since there are so many of us OMFS newbies on here now.

I've always wanted to purchase the first edition of the Surgical Approaches To The Facial Skeleton textbook by Dr. Ellis, but it was out-of-print long ago! Knowing that the 2nd edition was coming out, I always told myself that if I ever match, I will buy this textbook as a self gift!

It's an amazing text and I'm sure all the current OMFS guys can vouch for that. Well, the "jack pot" I spoke of is an amazing price of $159.20 + tax + shipping for this book! I just bought one for $171, brand new!

Check it out, you won't find another vender any cheaper than that for this great text:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4024919&sourceid=01726856202717285006

Get it before Walmart runs out of stock!

You can save your money on this one because it is also on a CD. Most likely one of your upper resident will have this CD and you can just make a copy of it.

If you're going to get the Ellis' book, then I hold off on this one.

i have on CD if you want. 😉 😀

I paid $200 for the old edition as well. I saw the new one sitting on Ellis' desk last week and thumbed through it. Many of the old drawings are there but there are lots of good photos now also (including some nasal photos I took about a year ago....look for the blurry ones). That's all I saw before Ellis snatched the book out of my greedy paws and told me to get back to work.

Those are my votes. The Lore Atlas is a huge book for the money ($250 I think) and has great drawings and descriptions of almost every procedure done between the plura and the dura. Shan Baker's text is a classic. I'll probably buy it after residency because I'm a book nut, but we have it in our resident's collection for now.

All you need to know for next year are these four things:

Soft Tissue Trauma
CR of Mandible Fractures
Maxillofacial Infections
"How to Avoid Putting My Foot in My Mouth on a Regular Basis"

I read up on the first three, but missed the last. Hindsight is always 20/20...

Wal-Mart fails to cover 60% of their workers with any health insurance
70% of Wal-Mart merchandise is from China When Wal-Mart comes to town, for every two jobs it creates three jobs are lost. The way Wal-Mart runs its business has accelerated the outsourcing of U.S. manufacturing jobs overseas, lowered working standards at home and shifted the burden of caring for their employees to U.S. taxpayers. Wal-Mart’s low prices have come at a high cost:
- Wal-Mart costs federal taxpayers over $1.5 billion a year in welfare to their employees
- Wal-Mart tops the list of companies with employees and their dependents on public assistance in at least 11 states
- Wal-Mart has agreed to pay $4.1 million in Clean Water Act violations and $50 million to settle allegations of underpaying employees

Dude, what's this have to do with anything as far as getting a textbook from Walmart.com? Just received a shipping confirmation from Walmart.com that my new text is on its way! As long as I get my book at a great price, I'm cool! 😎

I'm sure we can dig up crap on Target, K-Mart, Circuit City and BestBuy!

if you can't put 1 + 1 together then i'd rather not explain the correlation to you. just re-read the post and contemplate for 2-3 minutes. you can do it.

you can of course dig up plenty of crap on the rest. but i assure you not NEARLY as much as walmart. do and try digging, you'll understand.

or else ignorance is bliss, so stay cool.

this isn't meant to be a personal attack on you, nor to rain on your excitement of matching into omfs. all the best.

Dude, I understand your point about walmart and I did not take it as a "personal attack"! I simply can't pass up a great deal for an amazing textbook!

What does walmart pay in taxes each year?
Why is walmart responsible if its employees are on welfare? Would those people be on welfare with or without walmart? Are those people better off than if they didn't work at walmart? Is walmart employing people who couldn't obtain better jobs?
Were the 11 states in which employees and their dependents on public assistance because Walmart gives jobs to the poor? If walmart didn't employ those people would they get better jobs with better companies or would those be people be on public assistance and UNEMPLOYED? Does walmart twist the arms of its workers so that they can't become educated, work harder, or grow in such a way that they control their own destiny?

When you look at information, don't be a liberal knee jerk reactionary. Think like a scientist, an intelligent person and ask yourself questions. You learn key skills in dental school and residency about critically analyzing information. Understanding cause and effect vs associated factors. Being able to undeniably link cause and effect takes important information. Why don't you pick on not obtaining an education and that weight on society? Or the cost of people making poor choices and those costs on society? Then you realize problems in this world are due to individual choice, lack of discipline and bad culture. Businesses look at every situation to take advantage of those situations. Like walmart/mcdonalds or any other company that employs minimally skilled, low motivated, poor cultured people. When I go to walmart, I see many skilled, hard working people but I see alot of people who wouldn't have a job if they didn't work their. They might enhance or strengthen bad lifestyle ruts but they don't cause them. People do it to themselves. People need to stand up and take charge of their lives and quit shifting blame....Do an experiement yourself and look at a big n number of "walmart" employees. See if walmart is improving their lives or hurting them. Maybe you might be suprised to find that those people causes taxpayers to pay 3 billion in money where as they now only require 1.5. I don't know, but my scientific mind that likes conclusive evidence tells me that your comments with out qualifying data is premature.... I guess too many journal club meeting over the past few years makes me question all assertions without clear data...if you feel I've not been polite, just email bifid uvula and commisurate with him. Farley, yes your training seems to have injected some robust intellectualism and critical thinking into your thought process. congratulations. however, rule #1 - READ the website. It’s not a bunch of mush – over 100 references. many of teh questions you posed are answered there. perhaps you’ve treated one too many Medicaid patients who was ungrateful for your emergency treatment and just had to let it out. In the process certain aspects of walmart and its extremely poor impact on American economy were missed and you generalized a little much. my common sense rationale will off course agree with some points of your cause, effect, associated factors concepts. we all have to deal with the many uneducated, unmotivated, uncultured members of society, who have a false sense of entitlement. also agree with your statement that businesses take advantage of its workers and may strengthen bad lifestyle ruts. however, Walmart practices have crossed the line. for those who are trying to stand up and elevate themselves / take charge as you put it – newsflash not everyone can afford education in this country - walmart works against them.
Walmart is by far the worst place to work and while some employees are better off from it (my lil bro was “better off” after shoveling the driveway all winter for 10 bucks too). If they are so happy there as you seem to infer, why does walmart have the highest turnover rate??? And before you say oh they must’ve gone back to snorting coke, or tossing salads or whatever, believe it or not they probably went to another entry-level job in the same town.
my major gripe which you didn’t address is walmart’s effect on the local community – read the document and you’ll see what I mean. so not only are they taking extreme advantage of employees, but taking the community down as well.
another pointer, don’t resort to faulty assumptions (i’m no knee jerk liberal), it only weakens your argument. Dismissing someone as ohh a bleeding heart liberal, or corrupt neocon is quite childish. Believe it or not, most Americans are in the middle of the spectrum, and choose to be “liberal” or “conservative” on specific issues. Many conservative have the same contempt towards walmart.
alrighty then, back to class.

North2south, i question your canadian-ness...what happened to the coherent logical paradigm-forming structures in your brain. your sentence structure includes a lot of dangling modifiers that force the reader to absorb a huge mindful of information garbage before the sentence gramatically closes. at my school, the canadians are always at the top of the class, perhaps you are masking your intelligence. I understand you want to take part in the machismo American culture by joining with yor friends with the bleeding heart comment – good one.back to walmart now although they have made significant inroads, here’s hoping walmart doesn’t fully integrate into your Canadian society. See the reason we vacation up there is to get away from Anytown, USA. 80% of our cities are the exact same now – a walmart, a Costco, same cinema, chain restaurants, neighborhoods are being massively developed and reproduced so every house looks the exact same with same yard dimensions. But it’s ok because we can choose whether or not we want granite kitchen counters.Hey i loved my weekend in montreal where I didn’t see a single mcdonalds. Instead I enjoyed a fantastic, and may I add fresh Mexican food from a family owned restaurant tht has been there for decades, and next to my hotel was a brilliant thai restaurant..most items for less than 7 canadian dollars. Judging from your comments you must be from Toronto which has successfully been Americanized, even the crime rate from what I hear. Soon all its citizens will eventually become slightly obese burger-king eaters, eventually dissolving into the anti-intellectual hedonism of Americow.
By the way, you guys must’ve liked the tossing salad line I threw in there, right? ok it's fri pm and my brain is fried.

Same difference...

I think the only distinguishing characteristic between Canadians and Wisconsonites is a Canadian's ability to drive over 55MPH. Also, most Wisconsonites aren't able to play hockey...the ice can't support the weight.

alrighty then, back to class.

I did read it with my wife. After I read the entire thing, my wife had written down 48 questions that we have about the thoughfulness and scientific stringency of their conclusions (they stretched their conclusions based upon the data and interpreted liberally, not politically liberal, but scientifically liberal). You are entitled to your opinion/conclusions. (She was in labor in the hospital for 11 hours and we were board so we had time to read it.) You can buy and say what you want. But if you can't see the website's agendas in its conclusions, then you "being in the middle" means that you just haven't recongnized who you are yet. I wouldn't practice business like walmart, but they operate within the law and individuals are responsible for their own destinies. I have a specific problem with individuals blaming anyone but themselves for what is happening to them and where they are at. I am not mad at you S Files and I am not trying to crush your opinion, but I interpret the data more conservatively, scientific not political, and I just counterbalanced your opinion... sorry. (if the moderaters think I have egged this on too much then I will remove this paragraph) I could really care less about walmart, but the process of data/information and conclusions I think is helpful, interesting, and important.

As for OMFS text books, I haven't bought any. I've read alot of Fonseca's and I have Peterson's on disc. Both have strengths and weaknesses based upon the subject. The fun part is getting a basic data base and then reading the JOMS. I really like the journal because it: makes me think, ask questions, challenge results, draw my own conclusions, introduces me to controversies, exposes me to what issues are on the minds of my collegues outside of my program, and because it is free to me! For the time invested (to read the articles) I think the yield is extremely high (how much I get out of it).

Some questionably might think he looks like a donkey.... but unquestionably, he's much more ruggedly handsome than the rest of you hosers....so here is the order of rugged handsomeness and stunning good looks

1. John Wayne (don't laugh-cowboys)
2. baby esclavo (getting better looking each day-trip down the canal scarred/beat him up a little but he's getting over it)
3. donkey (made for function/usablility not for looks)
4. small crustaceons (primitive life forms)
5. mtheman and the rest of the peanut gallery (baby esclavo is only 3 days old and has gotten more feminine attention than the rest of you all put together since birth!)

Looks like baby esclavo is on a track to overtake John Wayne someday...unless he decides to become a periodontists and then he would be transferred to a total different list where the number 1 is "Boy George"....

Same difference...

I think the only distinguishing characteristic between Canadians and Wisconsonites is a Canadian's ability to drive over 55MPH. Also, most Wisconsonites aren't able to play hockey...the ice can't support the weight.

Just to let you know, the above statement is from a man who is currently dating a wisconsinite.

My how this thread has grown. U're a wisconsinite...my mistake. Ignore my post in that case. Wisconsin folk are quite similar to Minnesotans and their Dakotan brethren. Not too sure if i've ever been called a Bum before.and then there's a thumb's up sign. ok great.

Try Amazon- it is even cheaper

Let's see 59 cents a pound X 324 pounds= $191.16, I'd say that you got a good deal for your wife Esclavo

Hey, don't knock his wife...how many women do you know that will let a guy ride 'em like a donkey?

What book would be the best to prep for the ACLS class? What book did those of you that are current residents use?
I will buy the book from wal-mart, even if S-files mom works there.

Is that photo from a wal-mart ad, I know that they always use pictures of employees. S-files your sister is very sexy, I promise. Her body is truly a wonderland; I mean really you would get lost.

The best book is the actual ACLS Provider Manual around which the course is designed.
