For UAB and Jacksonville, no one wants to do cancer. The SDN posts on UAB did not help. It painted them in a weird light but still surgically one of the best programs. Jacksonville focuses too heavily on surgery with poor dentoalveolar. It’s great for someone that wants extended scope only.

For Oklahoma, they interviewed 40 people on one day and only had two 10 minute interviews. They sat around in a room for 8 hours twiddling their thumbs. The applicants were pretty pissed about that since they weren’t given the time of day. Coupled with the fact a couple residents that have left, I don’t think it put a good image of their program that day. It’s still a strong program and it’s a 4 year, the spots were filled instantly. They had like 70-80 applications right away post match.

Residents leaving is a common occurence. Some programs don’t publicize it and do a good job hiding it. Parkland did a good job of hiding that they lost 2 residents this last year.

So UAB and Jacksonville are cancer heavy? What other programs do you know of that are really cancer heavy?

UAB isn't really as cancer heavy as it would seem for having 4 cancer attendings. You do 2 months as an intern, 2 months as a 5 and 1 month as a 6. So, they do about 5 months total, 3 of those as an upper level. The upper level time is basically all in the OR with a lot of cutting. Even interns do trachs.
When you're on weekend call you do have to round on the cancer patients in the morning though and interns will get pages about cancer patients over night. During the week days they have a floor PA that covers the cancer inpatients.
Will also add, when you are off of the H&N service (35/40 months) you don't even think about it aside from on the weekends.
