Hey folks,

My wife is looking to get into OMFS program. She has been practicing for 5 years now. Her GPA is 3.45.
She is in the Army Reserves.

I guess her GPA is slightly low for OMFS?

If she scores high on CBSE, will it make her competitive?

Or is GPA and class rank what they primarily look at?

I've read it can be more difficult to get into a residency after being out of school for a while, but a good CBSE score is by far the most important factor for most programs.

Does the military have OS programs?

Does anyone know if it's easier to get into hospital based programs versus academic programs? I'm in a similar situation. Taking the CBSE this August, my GPA from dental school was 3.53, and I'm currently in a GPR.

All OMFS programs are hospital based, by “academic” do you mean 6-year MD programs or do you mean residencies that are associated with a dental school?

I'm only considering 4 yr programs. On the PASS website, the program answers the following question: "Is your program located in an academic institution or clinical institution?" I was just wondering what this means, and whether it's easier to get into hospital based programs.

I applaud you for doing a GPR, you probably have time to actually study for the CBSE lol

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn’t you attend an OS internship instead of GPR?

I had many reasons, one of them was because I wanted to have more time to study for the CBSE

Again, every OMFS program is hospital-based. Can't do major surgery without an OR. I looked at the PASS website and I believe what you're looking at is, if the program says "Hospital", that would mean they're like, headquartered as a residency program in the hospital they're affiliated with. My school has an OMFS program, so they're headquartered at the dental school, but do surgeries in the VCU Medical Center. Being "academic" or "hospital based" doesn't mean more or less competitive. If you're trying to find out more still, you might want to make your own thread, since this one was started by somebody asking a completely different, very specific question.

Can anyone speak from experience about how good a gauge the NBME/CBSSA forms were, compared to your CBSE score? And if so, can you throw out some numbers, like maybe exact numerical discrepancies between your scores on either? Doesn't have to be your actual score, just the ~discrepancies~ Thanks!
