OMM topless ??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, the sensitive exams are on Standardized Patient actors. But those who are squeamish about having female (or male) classmates half naked infront of them must have been very squeamish having standardized patients who were naked right?

We practice everything except for breast, pelvic, and rectal exams on each other at my school. We then qualify on each Physical Exam technique with a standardized patient while a clinical facilitator grades us.

Pelvic diaphragm release = might as well have shook hands with their prostate/cervix. Nothing is more awkward than that since you have to actively restrain yourself from applying he pressure too cephalad and ending up with a guaiac test.

Ha Ha, that's true.

Funny story, the other day we were having a review session in OMM class. They organized a Jeopardy type game for us to review with. The idea was that if you couldn't answer the question immediately, you could demonstrate the technique for half of the points, but it was a race to see who could properly set up a technique first to win. People were jumping on the table and doing rapid fire OMM trying to win the game.

I noticed when we got to the question about pelvic diaphragm release, nobody volunteered to be doctor or patient, the room just went dead silent and everyone sorta looked at their feet awkwardly.

I have to admit, I chuckled.

Is it weird as a guy to wear yoga pants and sports bra during OMM?

I have a question, but first a little background information. I'm 5'8 210 lbs no six pack more of a keg formation and am one hairy guy! Chest back, shoulders, everywhere. I'm happily married so I'm not looking to impress anybody when the shirt comes off. Should I shave/trim down my back/shoulder hair as a curtsey or just go all natural because everybody is going to need to learn to work with different body types? I know its going to be awkward for everybody at first then nobody will care, just thought maybe I should make it less awkward.

At 35, I am not too worried about wearing a sports bra and workout shorts, I'm not going to ruin anyone's lunch. My understanding is that it completely depends on your school, and your comfort level, but there are some schools that really make you sign a form stating you're aware of the requirements and aren't going to try to dodge them without cause (like you're Muslim)

I'd say embrace your inner-Sasquatch and go natural. Call of the wild, brother.

Ok, but if the bigfoot hunter/monster quest show comes to kirksville this fall I will be blaming you! 🙂
I shave the chest and what not because I'm just not a fan of it, so people at KCOM can get a feel for a "prickly" body type I guess.

I like where this thread is going...Love a good "hands on" approach 😀

Man I thought I was gonna be able to hide all my tattoos. Never got any that would be visible with my shirt on.....with my shirt off you can see all 12. Well I guess I'll cross that road when/if I get into med school this cycle.....

I'm kind of impressed that this thread is still kicking

lmao so true! Thankfully, as a so-cal girl, we are required to look a certain way, your typical beachy surfer girl, so I might not have too much trouble finding a partner! 😉

Is this a cry for attention or did I miss something?

Depends on the school, but for us - men take off their shirt, women in sports bras.

I do remember an article of a muslim woman suing a school in the east coast for asking her to dress appropriately for OMM. I think it was VCOM or WVSOM.

Impressive emoji... where do you get those? Black market?

I think the bigger question here is : are girls actually good looking or ehh. This answer could make or break DO school for me

Yes, WVSOM got sued in 2008, and it wasn't really about dress code. The woman had been academically dismissed after having to repeat her first year and then failing two systems in her second year. A local judge granted her a temporary restraining order, but I don't know what happened after that: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=538113

Idk, I'm good looking... but I'm 35 and married... I can't say everyone in my class is, but based on the FB group I'd say we have a decent looking group!

UMDNJ SOM must be an exception. The student tour guides at my interview said students don't remove clothing (after somebody asked them) because it's supposed to be important to palpate through it or something.

That's actually kind of stupid IMO. The first thing we're taught is to always look under clothing because that's how you miss an easy diagnosis. What if the patient has spina bifida and you could have realized just from lifting up their shirt? Or what if they had a cellulitis? You would miss such an easy contraindication to some techniques by not looking. Sure I guess you could just tell the students to make sure you really look when you have a patient, but skills should be repetitious.

Sounds to me like it's an excuse to not make students take off their clothing. Don't get me wrong, palpation skills can definitely be made better by learning to palpate over something distracting, but their reasoning just sounds silly.

Are there any concessions made for students who might not feel comfortable taking their shirts off? For instance a male with severe gynaecomastia (from taking a boatload of hgh/testosterone at 15 for a broken back while playing rugby) and unsightly scars (from getting shocked by a swinging electrical wire that broke during a storm) without the funds to have either taken care of surgically. Not looking for ridicule - just honest opinions by those who might know policies.

Might as well call and ask before you bother applying.

You could try to get into a school where students don't take off their shirts. I think CCOM wears scrubs to OMM, and only lift their shirts up to the abdomen sometimes. DMU is like this to, I think. Not sure.

My understanding is that they do make some concessions, what would Muslim women do??? I think if you talk to them it will be fine... additionally, you should remember this is medical school and no one would judge your looks based on what happened... if anything, you could be a learning tool 😉

That's what I thought at first too, but some traditional MS1s aren't far removed from being immature undergrad students.
