As stated before, OMM = OMT = OPP
As for NMM, that is for Naturopathic medicine, or something like that, and is not the same as OMM/OMT/OPP, or osteopathic medicine.
why do ppl bump such old threads .. theres been alot of this lately 🙄
FYI according to our head of OMM...OMT = Osteo. Manipulative Treatment. Physicians provide treatment and ancillary staff provide thearpy. Lame huh? But I'm visting the folks in Los Banos and I'm bored so you get to suffer through posts like this.![]()
NMM= Neuromuscular medicine. At KCOM there is a combined FP/NMM residency. So in the non medical world it is OMM and Family practice.
Here's what I have deduced heading into week 3 of med school. OPP is the lecture portion where you learn about the history of osteopathic medicine, the reasoning for the techniques you use in lab, the theories of osteopathic medicine, etc. OMM/OMT is the actual lab portion where you put these techniques into practice. This is where you get the hands on training to be able to perform OMM. Our first lab was to locate palpable landmarks on the upper extremities, vertebral column, and torso
According to PCOM's site here's a differentiation:
What is OMM/OMT?
- Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM)
- Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT)
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a specific type of medicine utilized by osteopathic physicians (D.O.) which uses the hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness. The techniques are successful due to the close association of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system (neuromusculoskeletal system) and can be used in conjunction with or in place of surgery or prescription medications. OMT includes many different techniques ranging from a light pressure being applied to an impulse being used for joint mobilization. The main purpose of OMT is to restore the body's natural balance (homeostasis) to promote health and healing. All osteopathic physicians are taught these diagnostics and therapeutic palpatory skills and may use them in their practice.
The Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) practice at PCOM consists of physicians who specialize in OMT and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Many common complaints such as low back pain, neck pain, headache, shoulder problems and knee problems may be helped with this treatment. It may also be helpful in patients with other medical problems affecting the gastrointestinal, cardiac, pulmonary, etc. systems as an adjunct to their existing medical treatment.
A little late on contributing to that conversation, but congrats on figuring out how to use the internet to look up things. The OP has probably survived medical school, and figured out first hand what OMM and OMT stand for.
Yeah, aparently.Yeah, aparently.
