OMR (oral and maxillofacial radiology) is a specialty I don't hear people talking about so much. This is one of the specialties I might be interested in exploring to see if it interests me, considering my background is in electrical engineering, so I have experience in things like image processing.

So many people talk about how they want to gun for OMFS or ortho, with endo, perio, and pedo being at the next level in terms of popularity. I have not heard somebody say (yet) that they are interested in OMR, although I also know there are also fewer residency positions than those specialties. I'm pretty sure you still want a good academic record in dental school, but could I be correct in assuming that there won't be as much emphasis on class rank?

And very, very few job opportunities.

Yeah, I heard most are working in academia, and you might spend more time teaching and doing research as opposed to seeing patients. But I think you still shouldn't have an issue finding employment though?

That would be highly dependent on the number of faculty at most schools compared to the number of people graduating from OMR programs, as well as their turnover rates.

I have talked to other residents and looks like private practice/work from home is an option for them and they do fairly well.

It seems like it’s a good gig if you can get specialists and dentists to refer regularly to you.
