I have my 1st externship coming up in 2 weeks and have absolutely know idea 1)what to wear 2) what to bring 3) what to expect, 4) what is expected of me, etc... I was hoping an OMS resident could just let me know what an externship is all about and answer some of these questions. thank you in advance.

If you wear a tie the first day you will look good. You might feel like a weenie, but it will tell them you are interested in impressing them. Bring your Peterson text or whatever OMS book you like for reference. Expect to have your butt whipped and to take call as much as possible. You will be expected to take call with the residents and stay all night in the hospital, attend all resident functions/classes and work hard. If you want to impress them be the first one there and don't leave until they tell you twice. Have fun and learn a lot.

That all depends which program he is doing his externship at. At some externship, you don't do "jack"!

Jake, why don't you tell us where your externship is, then maybe some of us can give you more specifics on what to expect at that program. Some of the OMFS residents here on SDN may be resident(s) at that program.

I'm not a resident but I did 6 weeks total recently so I can answer the first two.
1)
-Some places will provide scrubs, other ones expect you to bring your own so find out beforehand
-x1 set of nice shirt and tie, nice pants, and nice shoes (you can wear them on the first day or on some special occasion they may have)
-x1 set of going out clothes for the little free time that you have (more if you plan on partying like a rock star...aka Doggie)
-Bring some comfortable clothes (shorts, tshirts, etc)
-***x1 LAB COAT for rounds!
2)
-x1 Laptop (preferably wireless)
-$$$ (preferably millions)
-x1 tub of lube (preferably king size)
-x1 brain (preferably large)
-x2 balls (preferably brass)

That's all I got.

Dont forget to tell him that you had to bring condoms for those long call nights with residents.

Thanks for the advice guys...it's really that bad, huh? And the recommended book is Contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by Larry Peterson? Seems like I'll have my hands full but Im lookin forward to it. I understand the shirt and tie, now I'm just wondering what the comfortable set of clothes is for?

Yeah, but you should expect it anyway. That way you are prepared to work and the programs like that mindset. But yes, there are programs where you get to "watch" a lot.

Nah. We're just pulling your chain. I actually hated each time I had to go back to dental school after an externship. But be prepared to work hard.

Unless you want to hang out in scrubs after you leave the hospital, then grab a few t shirts, jeans, shorts, sandals...whatever. This is the "comfortable wear" I was referring to. Also, have a nice set of going out clothes if you plan on hitting some of the nicer joints.

I'll say it again: Shave your ankles....that way you won't lose grip.

Comfortable wear? You did look pretty comfortable that one night at the bars..........

Since we're posting personal pic's, here's a pic from my camera phone of Doggie and one of the other 2nd years I caught one night in the call room:

hi all..i am new here, and i am from syd australia.
i will be heading to parkland for a OMFS externship in early 2007. From what i have gathered so far (from other discussions in SDN), parkland offers a worthwhile, albeit intense, externship experience. I am just wondering if any of u guys have done an externship at parkland before. and if so, could u kindly offer some feedbacks, tips, ..etc..etc. (e.g. daily schedule, knowledge required, dress-code,..etc..etc)

thanks guys..much appreciated

Good day mate!

Schedule:
Rounds (sometimes) at 7:15, breakfast, Starbucks, clinic or O.R., lunch, clinic or O.R., go home at around 5:00 unless you take call. This is more or less my two weeks there. They have a few different hospitals so change things up and check out some of the other ones. They did have evening conference one night per week.

Knowledge required:
How to pull teeth, retract, and suck blood

Dress Code:
Scrubs but bring your own b/c they don't provide them unless you do "special" favors for the residents

Overall:
They don't baby you like some other places so you have to learn on the fly but you learn faster this way. If you build their trust, they will let you do more complex procedures. Residents are super cool and you will be dropping the F-bomb regularly by the end of your stay.

PM me if you want the real dirt:laugh:

thank you! where did you stay flat4 while you were there? i am also interested in watching the infamous cowboys while i am there, at least for 1 game. but i heard it is next to impossible to get tickets -- some ppl have been on the waiting list to get a season pass since the dark ages. what else is there to do in dallas?

if i understand correctly then, the residents will be happy to provide externs with some hands on experiences?

thanks and appreciate ur insights =)

-I stayed at the Fairfield Inn near Parkland. They had an affiliation with the hospital so it was $41 bucks a night. I split it with another extern so you do the math. He also happened to have a car so I didn't have to rent. Nice guy and it worked out great. I highly suggest calling the secretary and see if there will be other externs at the same time so you can share costs.

-Cowboys. Assuming they are like Eagles games, yes tix are hard to get if you are trying to buy directly thru the organization. There are ticketing agents that buy all the tickets up and sell them for a profit. This is your best bet so go online and do a google search or go to eBay and start shopping for prices. Make sure the Cowboys are playing at home...and kick T.O. in the balls for me.

-Yes this is a "hands on" experience in more than one way. You will definitely get your hands dirty during the day in the clinics. In the call room, most of the hand dirtying is done by the residents:meanie: .

That is one busy clinic so you're gonna be pulling a lot of teeth. If I remember correctly, there were 92 patients one day. Mostly single teeth but a few fmx's both under local and IVSA. I got to do a few impacted teeth as well(under guidance of course). I ended up with about 100 teeth but I spent a lot of time in the OR so I probably could have gotten more. Other neat stuff I got to do included putting on a bridal wire, taking off arch bars, facial lacs, lot's of I & D's, etc. Some surgeries I scrubbed in on included rhinoplasties, implants, couple of mandibles, orbital floor blowout, ZMC's, LeFort's, and a crazy double jaw case(LeFort, BSSO, genioplasty, and septoplasty). Never got to help with plating but I heard they let you do that. Probably boring stuff for anyone in the field but it was definitely new to me and compared to externships where they won't even let you pull teeth, this was a great experience.
