Not sure if this belongs here:
The application on FAP says that you count yourself as (1) family member if you are not claimed as a dependent by your parents on taxes. This is true for me
Now I know you still must enter your parents taxes/income etc. If they are over the 300% but i'm currently unemployed, am I OOL? The family size for them is 3 (plus me makes 4), but I would write 3 since I am not in the family anymore as I am not on the dependent's list?
I just emailed them too.

What I would like to know is did anyone who was not claimed as a dependent get a FAP who parents earned more then 300% of the current poverty level.

No I don't think that is true. In the online form you fill out, there is a help button next to where you enter your parent's family size and I think I remember that it tells you to include yourself in your parent's family. Check on that though.

And to OldBat, I think the 300% guideline is a very firm one. For example, I think it was last cycle or the one before, there was a user on here that was ~30 years old, completely independent for a decade, and still was denied FAP because the parent income was over the 300% mark (but their individual income would have qualified).

This. The FAP is overall need based. You are still included, if you read what it asks you, if you still aren't convinced click the "help" button and it says the exact same thing OP!

Unfortunately your parents' income definitely will be taken into account, and if over 300% of the federal poverty level, you will probably not receive FAP. When I applied last year, I was not a dependent. Both my income and my parents' income were below the 300% level. I think this is the only way you can qualify for FAP.

what if my parents are divorced?? could I claim my father's side? 🙂

If I understand the application correctly doing this might get you through their initial screen but they will request financial documents for both parents to assess your total family income and you will get denied.

The program is in place to assist the most needy families; stop trying to work the system

Yeah but i'm the one paying for my things, not my parents... and I'm not working currently!

by paying for my things I mean the costs for med apps

Credit cards or ask your parents for help? If it was easy to get FAP based on your own income, nearly everyone would qualify. My parents would have helped if they could have, but my dad is back in school working only half-time. It really is just for people whose parents couldn't afford to support their application process based on inability to pay.

yes well i figured it was a good question to ask anyways. darn aamc.

I kind of doubt this, you have to apply for FAP and it takes a couple weeks with supporting documents sent in to be approved. Also, only the first 14 schools are free.

Not to derail the thread. I applied for FAP in December 2011 and was approved, does this count for applying this year? I applied then to sign up for my MCAT.

Unfortunately, FAP is only good for the calendar year so you will have to apply again to apply this cycle. You can get FAP for five years, though!

No unfortunately, it lasts for the calendar year in which you applied/were approved, so you would have to reapply with 2011 tax info for benefits in 2012. [https://www.aamc.org/services/applying/fap/ From their website, first paragraph]

Does anyone know if AMCAS FAP is based on gross income or adjusted gross income? I noticed the application opens January 8th and would like to know in advance if I am eligible.
Thank you!

They probably look at adjusted gross income. Below are examples of the 2016-2017 questions. The questions you fill out for yourself, you will also need to fill out for your parents (social security benefits, etc.) When you submit the application, you will also need to submit your tax return and all financial docs of yours and parents.
