currently a third year medical student and strongly considering neurosurg as an option for residency. is there a good place (book or web) to start looking at the different programs available, as well as statistics for some of these programs.

There is a green book called GME companion or something that has all the ACGME programs listed in it by state. It compares them. You can look on uncleharvey.com and see if they have any links. Contact programs early. Good luck!
