Can we find out why these programs are put on probation? Does this mean we shouldn't apply/interview with probationary programs?

I don't know the reasons for some of the programs being on probation. But I do know thats its not always a bad thing/harbinger of how bad the program is. For Wright State, I heard it was a problem with documenting procedures performed-- they actually performed all the required numbers, just didn't write it down-- and that they otherwise met every other criterion. So no, I wouldnt say it means that you shouldn't apply to programs on probation, just that its something good to know so you can inquire at the interview. Anybody heard any other explainations for why the other programs were on probation?

I'm curious about this as well. From talking to a couple of people in the OB/GYN department at my school, being on probation doesn't appear to be a reason not to apply to a program. Sounds like applying and inquiring about it at interview time is the way to go.

I also think checking CREOG's clearinghouse for the open positions is a good clue to problems at programs. Some places have open spaces in multiple years, which to me is worrisome. It's off of the ACOG website.

Don't flame me if I'm wrong, but I did hear that Jackson Memorial's probation had something to do with the call rooms and nothing to do with the actual care of patients.

Try to keep in mind WHY probation is a big deal....the problem is not really what the program did wrong, the problem is that 1) they did SOMETHING wrong and 2) by doing whatever that something is so poorly, they put the training futures of all the resident's at risk. If not corrected, probation can lead to closing of a program, which is bad...

I did interview at 1 place on probation, and declined another interview at a program with probation status when on the interview trail. However, after thinking about it, I declined to consider the program on probation, even though they assured me that it was "merely" an administrative issue. I would be very wary of a program that either is too disorganized to take care of the details, or that doesn't care enough about the residents to do so. Be careful out there!

Agree with this. Having a program shut down mid stream is a potential disaster. One university program after several years of probation, was shut down, forcing residents to find other programs.

Each program is required to tell you that they are on probation. In the recent past there was no way to find out they were on probation until you actually interviewed, so this list is a refreshing acknowlegment by the ACGME that there are programs with serious enough deficiencies to warrant correction, and applicants need to know this. This is one of the few tidbits we can actually get from an independent source before we spend time and cash on interview travels. It is also a powerful incentive for programs to clean up their acts on their own or lose potentially desireable residents.

Ask every program what RRC citations they've received and what their plan is to fix them. That'll give you a clue how they've performed. It's a reasonable thing to ask. They know everything about you...grades, board scores, honors, extra-curriculars...practically everything but your underwear color, so I think you should know their details as well before you decide to rank them. Ask things like board pass rates, program completion rates, if they have people wash out, try to find out why.
