Online CC biochemistry

Hey guys, any input would be much appreciated. I recently got my bachelor's degree, as well as acceptance to a few different schools. The school I want to go to, however, requires biochemistry:a class I have yet to take. I am working full time right now, and due to financial and time constraints, would like to complete biochemistry online at a community college. Any recommendations on a good online course that fits the bill here? Thanks!

university of New England is pretty reputable, but I've heard you'll have to work hard at it

I can recommend the UNE Biochemistry course. I actually completed the course about two weeks ago.

My advice if you choose to take the UNE biochemistry course: The entire course grade is based on your final exam which is made up of 93 multiple choice questions. The professor has posted all of the objectives on the course website. The test questions come directly from the course objectives. I did not use the paper textbook nor did I use the online video lectures. Rather, I focused solely on memorizing the students notes which are posted on the course webpage. The student notes are the answers to all of the course objectives which make up the final exam. If you make a C or below on the final exam, the professor will give you an opportunity to void the final exam, study and retake the final exam again at a later date.

The cost of the course is a bit steep I'll admit but it's worth it. If you want to do yourself a favor, you could actually go ahead and start studying for the final exam (because all of the material is online) at http://www.onlinebiochemistry.com and just sign up for course when you're ready to take the final examination. This is what I would have done in retrospect. ALL of the study material is freely available on the website. You only need to signup for the course to take the final examination.

I couldn't recommend the Colorado State online biochem course more. Dr. Aaron Sholders is a young, energetic prof who is very accessible during the course. He also has incorporated a lot of software and tech in his teaching methods that are a huge help for visualizing the molecules and their interactions.

If you have any questions, let me know. I actually applied after the class was full last year, and he still let me in after I asked about it (and I'm not a CO resident).

Oh yeah, and there's pretty easy/quick weekly hw and 4 tests (I think) which break up your grade a bit. I definitely found this less stressful than the all-in-one final test grade most of these courses offer.

I'll also recommend the University of New England course. I learned a lot and took it while working full time. It was less than taking biochem at my local state university.

Thanks for the very helpful responses guys! (I made a new name on sdn..for some reason I couldn't log in using my old account). I looked into these options. I had previously thought about UNE's course, and Jena2nsu that is good to hear the course is set up like that, I'm almost certainly going to sign up for this course. I looked into Colorado State's online biochem as well. It looked like a solid course, but the summer course runs into when I would begin medical school, whereas with UNE's course it looks like I can begin whenever. Thanks again for the responses!

I know that she started taking any students after May 31st but am trying to get ahold of a copy of the objectives as this is what she has said the class is based around so that I can have more time to study for the course (her objectives are different from the previous teacher who has his posted online).

I heard that the updated UNE course is extremely difficult and time-intensive (~16 weeks to complete) from other threads. Did you find this to be the case? Do you know what the average grade is?

The quote above is no longer accurate as they have changed the course. It is completely different with a different teacher. If you read back in this thread I believe the grades are broken down but it is no longer solely based on your final. This course takes a lot of time -to understand concepts and be able to apply them. Although only the final and midterm are said to be comprehensive, in actuality the info builds so to be successful you have to understand concepts before moving on (some obviously more than others). I'm happy to answer any questions you have about the class. Also, I felt the final was more difficult than the other exams/quizzes.

HI! Quick question for you---Colorado State's tuition is pretty pricey. From your recollection, did you have to pay in one installment? Or a payment plan? Also, are official transcripts required when you take BioChem at Col. State?

I saw that but i just received an email last week from someone there stating they are no longer offering Biochem. Regardless, I will definitely follow up with them. How is the class so far? Is the final weighted heavily compared to the homework, quizzes, etc?

I generally use the book to summarize all relevant key points (following the general format of the chapter summary while interjecting more specifics from the text) in my module assignments, and I studied for the midterm based off of her feedback on assignments. How long did you prep for the midterm? Can you tell me the structure of it? It takes me a day to do discussion boards, days for the writing lol

Hey I am looking into which online biochemistry class to take and UC Berkeley one is the cheapest. How difficult is the class overall, and how much time do you think you had to put into it? I am currently in an MS program, so I do not have a lot of free time, but I need to take a biochemistry class.
