I'm going to be taking a summer class next week at my private school but I can only afford to take one (during session A). Session B at a local public school starts during session A (the last week). I was wondering if I could take an online class (not physics or org, etc.) at the local school and still have it affect my AMCAS gpa? Are they considered legitimate or will med schools just laugh?

Depends on the (med) school and the online program. Definitely don't take any prereqs online without consulting admissions offices first. (and even then I wouldn't do it) If it isn't a prereq then you'll probably be ok. (yes I believe it would still go on your amcas)

hey thanks! I was going to do a humanities (history or writing) just to explore outside of the sciences/learn something interesting while trying to bring up my gpa. I'll check around.

I doubt the class will even show up as an online class on your transcript. It will count toward your AMCAS GPA.

Your transcript will not advertise that you took a class online. I took Gen Chem 2 (yes, a pre-req) online, got an A and I'm still going to med school in the fall. If the school wants to know about what classes you took online, they'll ask in the secondary application. I had one or 2 (of 18) that asked about what classes I took online. I don't remember which ones, so I can't tell you whether or not I got interviewed at those schools. The point is that online classes are WAY convenient and if you can get them and do well in them, there's no issue in taking them. I've taken tons of online classes, at least 1 a semester every year I've been in school. So don't be afraid to take an online class because you think it'll keep you out of med school.
