Hey guys,

So I need to sign up for an online genetics class because I will be taking the MCAT in June and I've heard that genetics is very helpful. My school offers genetics, but it's a GPA damper and I don't need the lab anyways. Any suggestions?

What suggestions are you looking for?

All the genetics you would need on the MCAT was most probably taught in your Intro Bio series, taking an extra genetics course purely for MCAT prep would be a poor use of study time (do hella practice exams)

As stated above, only very basic genetics is needed for the MCAT. I hadn’t had genetics when I took the MCAT and scored a 131 in that section. If you really want to take extra classes for the MCAT, take cell and molecular bio or biochem classes.

I took genetics online through UCBX and found it very MCAT-relevant.

So audit it (assuming that's an option) and avoid the GPA hit.

But as others have said, the genetics on the MCAT is pretty basic. Chances are you don't need a dedicated genetics course to learn it.

I've heard that too! The issue is, my bio classes didn't really go into genetics...except for basic punnett squares, so I'm not sure that would really help me. I would prefer not to take it at all, and just study on my own, but the people that I know who did that regretted it and wish they had took a course.

Wow that's awesome!! When did you take the MCAT?

OMG I did not even think about auditing it! That's genius. I'll see if my university will allow me to do that.

I took Genetics before and nothing was on MCAT. If you planned to take it for the purposes of MCAT, I suggest other ways to prepare. Study on your own. 1 or 2 questions about genetics on MCAT does not worth taking a whole semester course and paying $1000-1500

As some of the other posters said, the genetics on the MCAT is really simple. You're fine if you know how to do Punnett squares.

I took the MCAT 3 times and had like 2 genetics passages and about 10-15 questions total putting together all 3. AAMC says genetics is roughly 5 percent but Genetics in a prereq for medical school so I'm pretty sure you need to take it anyway.

Edit: Sometimes taking a solo course at another uni or CC is looked down upon. It usually really doesn't end up helping you out much even if you get a A compared to a B.

No, genetics is not a prerequisite for Med school, it is only recommended course.

These 5% come from general bio, cell bio and Biochem courses.

All medical school are not the same. If you go to several of the sites they will vary slight, some do require. My state schools and DO both require genetics. Many schools require a certain amount of upper levels courses in which genetics is probably the most practical. So, it is better to take it than to automatically disqualify yourself from a certain school especially if you're aiming for your state school(s) or a top pick. Regardless it is on there and if you're fighting for every question which many premeds are, you may want to take it for that reason also.

I took it as part of my Bio Major requirement. I guess most do too. It is just not very necessary for OP's case, I guess, especially if they do not want to take it now. OP can self-learn the material for the MCAT purposes. Otherwise, I agree that it is a useful course and is part of Med School curriculum.

A full, separate course that covers subjects well beyond mendelian genetics will probably be of little help as a way of studying for the MCAT

Yes that makes total sense! Paying for the class and trying to figure out how long my account will in the negatives is giving me major anxiety!

At the least, I would recommend reading a few chapters from a good undergraduate genetics text. This approach does require self-discipline and independent learning that is a skill that you want to develop as you move forward in your career path. Also, the genetics text is a good reference to have available in your personal library.
