Online interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If it's an option, they will let you know when you get an interview. Very few schools offer this, but I think Duke might.

I like how I just assumed that any not-physically-present interview would take place over a web cam, and not just a phone.

For everyone else's information, don't assume this when talking to an MST program. They'll think you're crazy.

Lol..yeah it would have to be some sort of video conference. I don't know if they would do this for MD PhD. If you have 5-10 interviews, that's a lot of IT work. I've mostly only heard of it for MD only interviews.

For anyone that wants to do such a thing at some point in the future: Tokbox is free, simple, and easily accommodates to 20 people on the call, as well as let's you show videos, pictures, etc. And with no program to download (other than Flash and a web browser).

I like their product 😀 Now if they could just monetize it and stop eating venture capital 😛

i'm totally down for a webcam interview - it'd be great to start the interview by saying "so...what're you doing right now 😉"

I have never heard of an online interview. For MD/PhD programs, I would advise against it. So much of the interview process is about whether that person is a good fit for the program. You can't tell that via a webcam. Plus most MSTP's interview over several days. Plus you need to be there meet a lot people and see the facilities and the city. I could go on but I think you get the point.

I'm with CG. Landing at a tiny airport for an interview and stepping out of the plane to a -52F windchill speaks VOLUMES about where you want to live for the next 8 (+/- 1) years of your life. A phone conference has nothing on wandering around on a Saturday and finding there is nothing to do there, except you can't walk more than one block without feeling like you are going to die.
