I am beginning a program that starts in May for their summer semester. It has already been announced that the summer semester will be done online. Due to the ever-evolving situation of this virus, some universities are talking about making all schooling online until 2021. My program has not made this announcement but probably wouldn't until closer to the fall once the program has already begun. I am just curious if anyone has any thoughts/concerns with their program being online for the time being. I am concerned that I will not be able to understand the material just being online and there will be vital education gaps due to this that won't be made up when we do convene in person. Is anyone considering not starting their program due to this? I am so excited to be starting PT school but now I am feeling anxious. Thanks for your responses, I'm curious to hear what others are thinking in regards to these issues.

Hi! I am in the same boat, my school did not announce if we'd be online or not but It is looking like It mostly will be. I was supposed to start with Cadaver lab in June. I am concerned about the gap in learning this will create especially as we progress to other courses. However, at this point I am hoping It is online as I do not feel safe going out into society at this moment.

I'm currently writing an article about how PT schools have been affected by COVID-19. Another thing to think about is that clinical education is going to go through what one professor called a "crisis." Most clinicals are canceled now, so there's going to be a bunch of students who suddenly all need to go on their clinicals at once. And many sites that host students will cancel since they will be overwhelmed, closed, or out of business. No one really knows what is going to happen, but things are definitely going to change. Something else to think about if you're about to begin school.

As an educator, this COVID-19 crisis presents some new problems for us, but there are many possible solutions. We have to do our best and please remember that all students in the applicant pool are in the same situation.

It is likely that the fall 2020 term will no longer be in-person.

My school just made the announcement today for a virtual first semester. We start in June. We'll be having live Zoom lectures with voiceover Powerpoints included. Our gross anatomy course/cadaver lab will also be virtual and we'll be using several online modules/simulations. My school is tentatively planning to have some in-person labs at the end of the summer to try to close that skills gap, but we'll see. I imagine other programs would do similar adjustments.

I agree - it's weird to think about getting our first semester virtually. Definitely not what I thought my summer would look like!
