My wife and I are looking into opening a clinic in a remote area and have been looking into online merchant account which allows us to accept credit card payments. I am also looking for recommendations and solution for wireless solution but have not found much. We also looking into Authorize.net which allows us to accept payments online with a processor and found some good rates at http://unitedbankservice.com/medical.html and http://www.bankofamerica.com/small_business/merchant_card_processing/

If anyone had used authorize.net, please share your online billing experiences.

Are you speaking of the actual processing of credit cards? What kind of software are you using for the practice?

Most practice software programs now have the ability to set up for c.c. processing within the program. This allows you to process the card and post the payment at the same time.

My thoughts on the different processing providers (if your software doesn't have one integrated)-get processing rates from the companies you're interested in and do a comparison. If you find rates you like, don't be afraid to ask the company you like most to meet/beat it if they aren't the lowest rates. Also, in my experience, the banks tended to process faster with fewer bouts of 'crashing'. Nothing is really more frustrating than trying to process a card and having the cc system go down.

Things to think about:
Turn around time on deposits and refunds.
How do they extract the fees for processing? Is it at month end? Daily? Are the processing percentages constant?
If you plan on taking personal checks, find out if your cc processor has a system for check guarantee. As long as you follow the steps they require to get an approval, they'll guarantee the check. This removes the hassle of collections on a bad check. There are varying levels of guarantee. The more of a 'guarantee' you have, the more you pay in fees.

Banks are really strict on merchant accounts, sometimes they require that you've been in business for a number of years.
