Just wanted to pass along two resources that I found lately to learn a little more about the programs that you're serious about (aka waste more time on the internet thinking about residency applications).

The first page is one that you are more likely to have seen while looking for average USMLE scores on the NRMP web site. The part that I found interesting is the "Program Results" pdf that shows how many residents matched each year and if it filled over the last 4 years. You can also find later data to see if the number of residents has been changing or what

http://www.nrmp.org/data/index.html (especially, http://www.nrmp.org/data/programresults2008-2012.pdf)

The second one something that I hadn't heard about until recently. The ACGME accredits residencies based on site inspections. The frequency of inspections correlates to the number of violations than they find. The longest time is 5 years (thus very few criteria were missing from the ACGME's standards) and the shortest is 1 year or probation (ie many violations). 3 years seems to be about average.

https://www.acgme.org/ads/Public/Programs/Search?specialtyId=79&orgCode= (click on view program next to a residency and look at cycle length which is the length of the accreditation)

Like everything else on SDN, take this with a grain of salt. Not every 5 yr accredited program is better than a 3 yr accredited on. But if it's less than 3 yrs, you might want to ask why. Plus many of the consensus top programs at 5 yr accreditations (Kessler, Seatle, etc.)
