What if you're accepted to a really expensive private school earlier in the cycle, but you are waiting for a state school response which doesn't come until later in the cycle? I wonder because I know I have a much better chance of getting into an expensive school so I intend on calling the admissions office with my serious intent to go to that school, however if I do get into a state school, I realistically would be going to that because of the cost. Do I only have 30 days to respond to deposit if I get into an expensive school? and if I had to wait more than a month for the cheaper school, then I basically lose my spot or deposit? Thank you.

Sometime you get a little bit more time. It really depends on the school. They'll notify you about the deposit deadline on the acceptance email/package. If you don't make payment by the deadline, you're done.

Those kind of calls *probably* don't make that much of a difference. I'm sure schools get a LOT of them. You can show your interest in other ways, such as by sending an email around September that includes pertinent updates to your file (new work experience, volunteering, etc.).

Say you get into an expensive school on December 1st. You wait until the last day you can send your deposit--say January 1st--and still haven't heard from cheaper schools. Just to keep a spot, you put down the $1000 deposit (or however much it is). This secures your place.

You keep waiting. If you find out from a cheaper school that you are accepted, you can then put down a deposit at that school. At that point, you would need to tell the more expensive school that you would like to relinquish your seat. They aren't going to refund you the deposit money, which stinks, but oh well. It happens. And hey, that money at least gives you the peace of mind that you *will* be going to dental school! 🙂
