Does your hospital have this rule?

I shadowed a trauma surgeon back in March of 2011 and he said I'm more than welcome to shadow him again whenever I have time or when school is out.

So since I have time during the summer I decided it'd be a good time to fit some in, but apparently you're only allowed to shadow a physician 1 time a year according to the HR when I called.

I found it odd. 😕

What? That makes zero sense. Try talking to the trauma surgeon.

They might be able to get past the suits in HR.

Go there anyway...what are they going to do? Escort you outta there?

HR is asking for trauma...lolz

Dude, I was baffled 😕 and you know what sucks, all my connections are in that hospital! GS, peds, IM, card, gas, CC.

And the other thing is all the smaller hospitals around my area doesn't allow student shadow.

I have no choice but to hit up the offices and smaller clinics, knowing them they might not even allow that either cause I got rejected by them.

Drove 45 mins to the nearest teaching hospital cause they're the only one who allows it, now I get hit with this crap. 😡

Go to a different hospital. Just go to their website and email as many doctors as you can (100+). Some of them (1 or 2) will email you back.

It helps if you are a volunteer at the hospital you want to shadow at because you have already gone past HR at that particular hospital.

Figure out the doc's schedule and show up when he's there. If HR is there to intercept you and you've been outsmarted by a department that by and large doesn't give a **** about their jobs, then you're probably not cut out for medicine anyway

That's what I did man, and all those docs who emailed me back are all from that hospital.

I work as a CNA at my hospital but whenever I ask they straight up tell me no -_-

NVM the clinics and offices they told me no too and they're affiliated with the hospital I work at 😡

I was so happy finding a group of docs in different specialties, thinking I'll be all set covering a range of specialty to only find I gotta start from square 1 -_-

Go around HR. Problem solved. Believe me, if half of the posts on this forum are true they're going to be more worried about stopping the residents/attendings from sleeping with 18 yr old incoming freshmen pre-meds than stopping you from standing in an OR

yea, get the surgeon to e-mail/advocate w/ HR for you if you can. they really have no reason to tell him he can't have someone shadow if he wants. he should just be able to say, "hey AsianPersuasian is going to shadow me --- please set him up w/ the appropriate paperwork."

I really dislike dealing w/ HR. really there should be nothing to do for them assuming your TB test is up to date.

It piss me off 😡 they have all my info. Yeah, I think I'm gonna talk with the surgeon and tell him what they told me. I'd hate to go around HR's back and get him in trouble.

When I was in college I ran into something similar- I was allowed to shadow in the department I wanted for a 2 week period as much as I wanted but not any more after and the physicians could not write letters. I did around 40-60 hours both of those weeks and then ended up going back to the department after my first year of medical student to do research and clinic with the same doctor who set up my shadowing since the hospital wouldn't let me research as an undergrad.
