Open forum for discussion of what does and does not belong in the pre-dental forum

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there are threads that annoy the bejebus out of me. especially the "check out my stats" threads. that is one of the MOST useless threads started on this forum. do they know what COUNSELORS are for? and why not call the dental schools themselves? we're not ADCOMS. only i am the mighty ADCOM. so the majority of us don't necessarily know the chances of an individual being accepted. anyway, enough about my ranting of annoying threads. there have been several, i.e. BYE BYE SDN, that should've been closed way before it expanded to several pages. it made people angry, and they in turn called this one anonymous individual names. i had a laugh, but it wasn't appropriate. i thought that was a very useless thread. for the WHO ROLLS TIGHT WHIPS thread, everyone was enjoying themselves. nobody called ANYONE names. that creates a more positive atmosphere, which merits it to be kept alive. it keeps US jolly to help out the annoying n00bzors. it creates a sort of balance. sorta like the circle of life. okay. 48 hrs of no sleep makes me sleepy. good night.

Based on your member requests we have created a new off-topic forum. This is a forum for all students to have fun and talk about issues which are not career or education oriented.

The forum is moderated. We plan to keep it a friendly forum which is accessible and enjoyable for everyone at SDN.

wondering what the difference is between that and the Drs. Lounge

There isn't one. What we wanted (and what the other forums would probably like too) is a pre-dental "brand" off-topic sub-forum, under the dental forums.

It is very nice to see that our requests and concerns are being seen and appreciated by the guys upstairs.

A dent/predent off topic forum sounds good. Good idea armor 👍

I along with others appreciate the fact that you guys are listening to the concerns of the SDN members...however I dont think we quite hit the mark yet. I think for the most part, we were looking for a off-topic forum specifically under the Dental section. Its not a matter of wanting to be isolated from all of the other sub-sections of SDN, rather we just want a forum where mainly dents/pre-dents can visit to talk about the stuff that is not specifially dental related, but concern people who are in our field. Im not trying to look greedy, but nothing would make the dents/pre-dents happier than our own sub-forum**. Once again, I am forever in debt to SDN for showing me the true aspects of getting into any health professional school, but it would be greatly appreciated if we were given out own off-topic forum.

Thanks,
Chris

**besides an acceptance letter to our school of choice 😀

I really dont see what the problem is with off topic threads.. I mean for example, the one about students cars.. it clearly says in the title its about cars, if you dont want to read it, just skip over it.. Sheesh.. Problem solved.. If some of us want to discuss things like that, it's not really a big deal that warrants being closed down.. If it was something offensive to people, like a racial thread, or an agrument was brewing in there, then I would say shut it down.. but talking about other things is harmless and entertaining... it gives us something to do other than responding to the "check out my stats thread" or "whats the difference between DDS and DMD threads..." Just my 2 cents...

Because there is still a demand for it, we'll create a off-topic forum specifically for the dental community.

However, the purpose of the "All-Students" forum is to allow off-topic discussions in an inclusive, collegial and fun environment. There is a big difference between this forum and the DrsLounge: moderation. The DrsLounge forums are unmoderated and consequently are not particularly inviting for anyone that is not part of that community already. Having a moderator for the All-Students forum encourages an environment which should be welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

The purpose of SDN is to have communities for specific health professions while also encouraging discussion and participation among these professions. That's why the advisors and moderators chose to create the "All-Students" forum, rather than individual off-topic forums for each community. In general, off-topic discussions are usually universal topics which can be enjoyed by everyone.

Ultimately, SDN is here for our members and we make our best effort to give our members what they need and desire. However, I still encourage everyone to consider which forum they wish to participate in. If exclusivity is what is most desired, then we will respect that.

that's what i vote for and i think it would solve a lot of the recent "problems" on the boards b/t the mods and those of us who would like this feature made available 🙂
