Are there ocular pathologists out there who were not trained in the basic med school -> ophtho/path residency -> fellowship sequence? A friend of mine who is a PhD in tissue engineering has taken an interest in ocular path, what would he have to do to practice clinical ocular path other than completing med school? Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

You can't practice ocular pathology and diagnose without going through medical school and residency: either via pathology OR ophthalmology + ocular pathology fellowship.

As an ocular pathologist, you need to know clinical correlations that will help guide diagnosis. Very important.
