Lately, I've been contemplating going back and doing a residency. I know there is a way to petition to go straight into a pgy2 for those this years of experience. I don't know how common this is, but that would be the only way I would consider doing one.

I've been in hospital pharmacy since graduation. Got my bcps and have experience in EM, critical care. I'm currently a critical care pharmacist for a mid size hospital. I have in interest in teaching and being in an academic setting, but almost every position I look at requires a pgy2 in that specialty. Is it worth it for me at this point to go back and do a residency? My worries are first employment post residency (since I have a secure job currently). Second, would a residency really give me any reasonable gain in knowledge base than I already have gained via experience? Its fustrating situation that seems can not be overcome without residency.

Honestly, I am not sure it is worth it in this job market to leave a good clinical job to do a residency. I'm not sure there is much to gain. Many jobs list the residency requirements but also say "or eqiv experience." If you are super interested in faculty jobs, then most want at least a PGY1. I know of one person who secured a PGY2 spot without a PGY1, but this was many years ago. ASHP changed a lot of requirements a few years ago and now says 1.1 Resident must completed an ASHP Accredited PGY1. Might be different if the program is not accredited.

Doesn't make sense to me to go back. You are BCPS and you have experience in a Specialty area(s). I am sure there are schools of pharmacy that will allow you to teach based on your credentials. I know professors that didn't do residency that are faculty. Do you precept now at your institution? That's teaching right there. I'm a current PGY-1 resident who is applying for faculty positions but you have much more experience than I do. I would say you can get a position 🙂

That's my biggest worry in the current job market. I do precept students btw. There are jobs that say or equiv. Experience, but on the other hand, there are many that state residency required. I guess my other concern was that if I did get such a position I wouldn't want to be considered not as educated.
