Y'all are seriously missing out. Go to the grocery store, buy white bread, Fluff, and Nutella, and make yourself the World's Best Sandwich.

Sometimes I just put nutella between two pieces of wheat bread and declare it a sandwich.

The heck with all this sugary sweetness crap.

Beer? Bah.

Vodka works, too.

I prefer the white chocolate, but the dark is awesome too. They occasionally carry it at one of our local discount-y stores for about the price of regular PB, and I always stock up when I see it. 👍

Oh, I have always thought white bread tasted like homemade glue😛 But I might go and get some and put it on my whole wheat bread😀

*Please do not judge me for knowing what homemade glue tastes like*

I'm a big fan of these:

Like seriously. I could eat one every day.

HopefulAg's fault for posting the Nutella snack.

Oh sure, it's always the male's fault. I see how it's gonna be.

Because Nutella is such a paragon of health!

I think zoos and marine parks CAN have a positive function though. Just exposing people to the animals may bring a certain few to become interested enough to enter fields like veterinary medicine, conservation, etc.
I don't think it even has to bring them into the related fields though. It's harder (all be it to different degrees with different people) to ignore something you've seen rather than something you don't know exists or is, to you, thousands of miles away and you'll never see.

I worked at an exotic petting zoo the summer after high school.
The owner also ran the local strip club
Did you used to work in Tijuana? Exactly how exotic was this 'petting zoo'?

Damn! I must have really been hiding under a rock for quite some time because I have completely missed this thread! I only read half of the first page and the whole last page. First page is a debate about animal rights vs. animal welfare and the last page is talking about chocolate, bread, and peanut butter. I wish I had seen it earlier so I could have witnessed the entire transitions. Oh well, I am sure it is quite an entertaining thread.

Ahahah yeah. I read through the first couple pages when this thread started and it just stressed me out + took too much time so I stopped. I'm only half listening to the Davis interview video and half browsing around, so I clicked on the last page here and was really confused that it now talked about chocolate. Now I'm hungry.

Someone mentioned somewhere that zoos aren't exactly "swimming in money".

I donno... I am instantly reminded of marine land. They have RIDES and yet still think its cool to take animals into captivity that end up living shorter lives because of it and teach them tricks for $$$. I didn't have to see The Cove to avoid them like the plaque... since seeing that, I'm happy that I live like 4 provinces from the closest one. Makes me physically ill to see people my age like "Omg, I went to Sea World, look at those killer whalez jump!". All they get out of it is that killer whales can do cool tricks, they can feed rays, and then they come back home, and continue going to their community college courses in graphic design or secretary or whatever and forget about their experience a few weeks down the road. Meanwhile, these animals are bored and dying. You've been keeping them for at least 50 years now... and nobody has figured out how to keep them entertained and keep them from dying prematurely? I just want to scream "WELL, LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE TO KEEP, THIS IS MEAN." Human race sucks though... can't change it... all I can do is silently cringe when people post pictures of the pretty dolphins... they can't even tell me what type of dolphins they are. Sigh.

End rant.

I want a cranberry orange muffin now... and a caramel mocha... and a car would be nice.

Far from Tijuana! Wisconsin! Somehow she had a partnership with a "zoo." I don't know anything more than that, and it must not have been a very responsible zoo, but it was all baby animals. When I worked there the most exotic was a baby ringtailed lemur, also baby emus. The mentioned capuchin monkey was once of of those babies, so was the kinkajou on site. She regularly got baby tigers as well....so, pretty exotic. She had less exotic, wild animals as well including a skunk and deer that were like dogs (they looooved attention). And there was a camel that lived in a pen with a bunch of goats. He was actually pretty cool, loved getting scratches. And of course she had all the regular petting zoo fair to go with the mix. Donkeys, chickens, ducks, pot-bellied pigs, etc.

The main draw for the place was the performing horses. They would rear up and run around in a choreographed show for the kids--I only caught part of it once, because I was always working, but it was actually pretty cool. A couple of trained macaws had a show as well.

Not bad for a little touristy attraction, but looking back, I don't think the place should exist. Last I checked, it still does. I never actually witnessed any obvious mistreatment of the animals, but like I said, the intelligence required to care for them just wasn't there. I just can't believe it's in the best interest of a baby lemur to be pet by a gazillion school-aged children every day. And like I said before, the monkey was by herself. It's just not...right. 🙁

Here is something I would love everyones opinion on.

Vet schools around the country are raising there admissions, some by 20 students, some by 40.... Anyway most of these schools just add out of staters-obviously because they pay more money and maybe in the hard economic times this is what vet school needs.

But here is one of the problems I see with this. All those extra students will eventually become vets, and in 4 or 5 year completely saturate the job market. I know that there is a shortage in food animal vets, but with SA and in many areas equine there are too many vets.

What do you guys think the job market will be like in 4 or 5 years? Is it going to be impossible to find a job? And if you do find a job is it going to be across the country and far from your family?

I have thought about this alot, Vet Med, and I agree that there are already too many SA clinics. I just spent an hour calling all the vets in my area to see if they do LA and only 1/3 of them did. and even one that did referred me to another because they rarely have LA cases anymore. I think there should be more food animal/large animal veterinarians, but it is not as desireable and that is why there are more SA than LA/FA vets. I personally would love to have a LA practice, but I have recently been mentally leaning to equine only. But that will not help the FA side of things, which is the what I gave in my interview for a career path. The problem I might have is boredom in FA. IDK....

sorry for not really answering any of your questions

I think the reason there are a lot of SA clinics is becasue there is a lot of DEMAND. I live in Madison, WI just down the road from the vet school, and the clinic I work at is within 5 miles of the vet school and a huge handful of other clinics. We're usually booked solid every day. If there were too many clinics/vets, this wouldn't be the case.

Now, it depends a lot on area (a town of 3,000 doesn't need 2 vet clinics), but in general I wouldn't say we're OMGTOTALLYOVERSATURATED. There are fewer food animals/horses in urban areas or areas where crop farming is significantly more profitable, and therefor fewer vets. There are a lot of factors that contribute to veterinarian density and job prospects, and it's not just the raw number of veterinarians.

I don;t know about many other areas, but everyone I tell in central NY about me getting into vet school is begging me to come back and practice in the area. There is a shortage of equine vets around here. It may be because there are not enough horses to keep vets 100% equine and many people don't want to do mixed practice so they don't move here. My own horse vet does about 85% horses and 15% LA but she is running around over a huge area since she is the only one for horses. If we had like 2 or 3 more LA/equine vets we would be set.

But yes, I understand your concern and agree. Personally I am going to try to see what I like best when I am in vet school. I think going and doing a residency or specializing in something would be the way to go since GP seems saturated enough as it is. Hopefully more people will begin to sway towards food animal or research so other GP people can get jobs.

I can congratulate you SDNers on your ability to convert. Thanks to a lot of the interesting perspective shared on other threads I am now seriously considering going into Equine/LA/FA instead of just equine. 😀 (This is unless I find out in school that I still love research and am willing to give up practicing.)

Maybe....I know that all the ones around here keep semi busy....they also do most of the boarding around this area. So if there is a holiday and you need to board your animal while you are gone on said holiday, you had better make an early reservation, because the vet clinics fill up fast!!! So that part is definately needed for sure.

Dude...I think I just got the joke. Hahahaha oh well I'm too nervous waiting for this friggin admission letter give me some slack

Well it's better late than never. 😀

I'm with the other guys - I have actually been purposefully ignoring this sucker all week because I can't stand long drawn out debates....and then I saw HopefulAg's post on another thread and came on over and you're discussing food???? You're debating food without inviting me?? UGH.

All I have to say is that nutella = love. Lots and lots and lots of love!

I was once in paris on a chilly fall morning and I got a freshly made crepe oozing with hot melting nutella as I strolled past the most beautiful buildings.... *sigh* it is one of my absolute favorite moments in my memory.

I had to look up what beignets were.... oh man, they look AWESOME :wow:

France is a dangerous, dangerous place to live. You can't walk a block without tripping over 3 bakeries. When you combine a pastry with Nutella, well...that's just playing dirty

😱 You guys I just had an epiphany.

I know I said I've never had Nutella, but is it similar to the creamy filling in side Ferrero Rocher candy 🙂love🙂???

Similar, but not quite as rich.

(And oh, FR! My loves! The absolute most perfect chocolate ever made!)
