Hi everyone...
what can an optomerist do other than checking the eyes and prescribe glasses or contact lenses? I know they can detect diseases like glaucoma, etc.. but would they be able to treat those diseases?

Thanks.

Yes, they can treat glaucoma with a variety of medications. If the meds don't work well enough, then they can send the patients to an ophthalmologist for surgery.

yes, if you are on the insurance panel you may treat many diseases.

Optometrists can treat pink eye, dry eye, or allergies. Optometrists may also insert lacrimal plugs, or remove foreign bodies from the eye. They may specialize their practice in a field such as low vision, pediatrics, contact lenses, or vision therapy. There are a variety of avenues an optometrist can follow in addition to your everyday refraction.

Thank you all for your input =)

you can treat it even if you're not on the insurance panel... the patient just has to submit for reimbursement. Granted, most people don't want to do that, but I have many that do.
