OR Caps

Ok... Question... I am assuming that scrub caps are meant to cover your hair and keep anything from falling into an open body cavity.... but are they really?? For example... are woman allowed to wear the scrub CAP even if they have long hair (tied back of course)... or are they supposed to wear the "hair net" looking attire?

I only ask because I have seen woman wear both the "cap" and the "net" and have never asked.... I don't want to go into my rotation and put on the cap and get yelled at, haha.

I dont think it matters. I spent a lot of time in the OR with some surgeons and there is a variety of masks and caps...I was told grab what is comfortable. Most of the guys wore caps except one ortho who always had his hair done up with gel. He admittedly wore the nets not to mess up his hair

women and long-haired men are supposed to wear the hairnet

I figure a hairnet or a scrubcap would mess up his hair either way...

you can buy the caps with the pony tail holders that are pretty cool, better than itchy paper, but check with your people 1st to see if you can bring in outside caps.

At the hospital I rotated at, you were technically supposed to wear the hairnet over any outside caps. Also, wearing your own cap as a med students is a little toolish.

Not sure about the hair net thing. I'd think you'd need to be covered by something more for sterile purposes possibly.

Either way, just know that there are two types of med students:

1. "Look at me, I want to go into surgery of some type" : Wears scrub cap out of OR suites to places like the caf.

2. Not going into Surgery of some type: Rips scrub cap off asap leaving OR suite.

that's stupid. I am going into surgery and never leave my scrub cap on after crossing the red line - unless I forget it on (rare). I don't think there is any correlation.

Was he a surgeon on Jersey Shore??

I have very long hair (female surgeon), and always wear the scrub "cap" that most male surgeons wear. The key is that all of my hair is covered. I can't stand the "shower cap" because of the elastic and I certainly DO NOT wear a hairnet.

My cousin who is chief of pediatric neurosurgery (female) who had hair that is down to the back of her knees, will put her hair in a french roll and cover with one of the hoods that males with beards will wear. This works well for her. Again, she doesn't like the shower caps for the same reason as I.

As a medical student, you must abide by the rules and regulations of the institution where you are rotating. If you are concerned about your head attire, consult one of the circulators before you enter the OR areas. They will usually let you know quickly if your hair is not completely covered or if your attire is wrong.

Well, it's not technically a hairnet -- it's just the ugly cap that looks like one. I believe it's technically called a bouffant cap. I feel like I'm working in a lunch line when I put it on, though, so hence the hairnet terminology.

I have long hair and wear the mens cap, as I hates the elastic and the poofiness of the bouffant. I tie my hair up in a bun and put the cap over the bun . I usually have more of my hair covered than the boys.
