On my pre-med req's from my school it says org 2 lab isn't necessary for my state schools. Is it diff at other schools?

I don't know anyone who took orgo 2 lab except Chem majors. I don't think it is required, but you should check out the websites for schools you are interested in just to be sure. They always list the required courses. At any rate, none of the schools I applied to required Orgo 2 Lab.

Did you apply to any top ranked schools?

I applied to Duke... and i got an interview.. so no problems there 🙂

I did apply to a few other top schools, but they're ignoring me at the moment. But I have friends at Hopkins Med and they never took Orgo 2. I guess I don't know about any other schools though. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Only chem majors take "intermediate" orgo lab at my school (hopkins) and I know for sure not every premed takes biochem lab (which could probably substitute for a second orgo lab). Our orgo 1 lab is 3 credits though. I suggest you ask your preprof office if you have one.

wait, not all schools require orgo 2 lab? 😕
I'm confused about this too!! That would be sweet if we don't need orgo 2 lab! 😀

And also, it's really easier than orgo 1? My TA's were talking about grading on percent yield and purity for second semester!! 🙁

Why do so many schools say that they require one year of organic chemistry with lab if they don't mean one year of lecture with one year of labs, as well? When I read, "one year of organic chemistry with lab", I didn't think that they meant, "one year of organic chemistry with one lab", just like I don't think, "one year of general chemistry with lab", means they only want one semester of general chemistry lab. I even thought that some schools will let you substitute biochemistry lab for organic 2 lab on a case by case basis.

I took it just to be safe, but I really don't think I needed too. I wish I had found out ahead of time what they meant by 1 year of ochem with lab.

is that what they mean though? B/c you need to have 8 credits of organic, wouldn't that be 2 labs? 😕

Yeah, I didn't even take biochem. But Will Ferrell is right- we get 3 credits for Orgo 1 Lab.. i think other schools only give 1 or 2 credits. Maybe thats why none of us took orgo 2 lab.

at my school, ochem lecture was 3 credits and lab was 2. 2 lectures and 1 lab is 8 credits. Thats why I just took the second lab so I didn't have to have this conversation in my head during applications.

exactly my point ... guess no point in getting around it.

At my school Orgo lecture 4 hrs/ Orgo lab 2 hrs
I didn't mind orgo 1 lab and don't have to take orgo 2 lab for my school's requirements. I might take it just to boost my grades, haha

I'm pretty sure that when a school requires one year of organic chemistry with lab, they mean one year each of lecture and lab. For example, Vanderbilt requires one year of organic chemistry with lab, and they mean a year of lecture and lab. Go to the bottom of this link and you'll see that they list orgo 2 lab as a requirement. http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/medschool/admissions/applicants.php
Note: They only include one semester of general chemistry to illustrate the exception of students whose schools offer a full year course compressed into one semester.

It specifies 8 hrs in organic. It seems like this can be satisfied with only one lab course at any school.

Well I hate all of you that get more then one credit for your labs. Mine are 3 hours and I only get 1 credit. So if I didn't take Orgo 2 lab then I would only have 7 credits. I thought other schools operated like this, but I guess I am just getting screwed.

Nah, mine is like that too! One lousy credit for lab!! So Orgo 2 Lab for me too! Poops! We'll get it through it!! 👍

same here....makes me sad 🙁

Organic II lab is fun, guys. You get to do much more interesting experiments than in organic I lab, and since you already have a clue about what you're doing, you finish a lot quicker. Plus, the students who are in the class tend to be better students on average since they've already survived at least one semester of organic lecture and lab. This is my favorite class to teach for the same reasons. 🙂

There is probably a lot of variation from school to school.

Oh, I bet that it would be a lot of fun to teach!

Argh, it's just another hoop to jump through, another class to take... okay, I'm gonna quit whining now! 🙂
