On my pre-med req's from my school it says org 2 lab isn't necessary for my state schools. Is it diff at other schools?

They always list the required courses. At any rate, none of the schools I applied to required Orgo 2 Lab.

I'm confused about this too!! That would be sweet if we don't need orgo 2 lab! 😀mshheaddoc said:wait, not all schools require orgo 2 lab? 😕
is that what they mean though? B/c you need to have 8 credits of organic, wouldn't that be 2 labs? 😕swimerpaco said:I took it just to be safe, but I really don't think I needed too. I wish I had found out ahead of time what they meant by 1 year of ochem with lab.
Will Ferrell said:Only chem majors take "intermediate" orgo lab at my school (hopkins) and I know for sure not every premed takes biochem lab (which could probably substitute for a second orgo lab). Our orgo 1 lab is 3 credits though. I suggest you ask your preprof office if you have one.

exactly my point ... guess no point in getting around it.swimerpaco said:at my school, ochem lecture was 3 credits and lab was 2. 2 lectures and 1 lab is 8 credits. Thats why I just took the second lab so I didn't have to have this conversation in my head during applications.
Mediculous said:I'm pretty sure that when a school requires one year of organic chemistry with lab, they mean one year each of lecture and lab. For example, Vanderbilt requires one year of organic chemistry with lab, and they mean a year of lecture and lab. Go to the bottom of this link and you'll see that they list orgo 2 lab as a requirement. http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/medschool/admissions/applicants.php
Note: They only include one semester of general chemistry to illustrate the exception of students whose schools offer a full year course compressed into one semester.
PuKcAo said:It specifies 8 hrs in organic. It seems like this can be satisfied with only one lab course at any school.

You get to do much more interesting experiments than in organic I lab, and since you already have a clue about what you're doing, you finish a lot quicker. Plus, the students who are in the class tend to be better students on average since they've already survived at least one semester of organic lecture and lab. This is my favorite class to teach for the same reasons. 🙂
