Hello All,

I am preparing to write the OAT, and I was wondering if I need to memorize some of the IR absorption values and NMR chemical shift values for the exam, and if I do, which ones do you guys think I should really focus on.

Your help is greatly appreciated 🙂

As far as I know, NMR is rarely seen on the OAT. Kaplan shows IR as being used to show the differences between two molecules. I'd know alcohols, ketones, and other major functional groups and where they show up on the IR spectrum.

ex: "IR would be most useful to tell which of the following pairs apart"
You aren't going to be able to really tell two alcohols apart, but if you have one alcohol and one ketone, that's a good situation for IR.

Just the basics.

i took the OAT last month

got 1 NMR Q and 1 IR Q.

I don't remember much, but i think both questions gave me an image of the NMR or IR and asked me to ID the most likely suspect in the answer choices.
the IR was a piece of cake, the NMR...not so much

Thanks all for the information, I guess I will just have an idea about the values of the most common functional groups and see what happens! Wish me luck 🙂
