Hello, I am taking organic two next semester and wanted to get some advice on what I should study.

My school starts on January 12th and I am traveling on a plane, so I have a lot of free time in my hands so I really wanted to start studying organic ii.

What are some topics I should really nail down on?

Thanks, and happy holidays.

Email your professor and see if they can send you a syllabus and then u can get started early.

Ochem 2 is brutal compared to one.

But I feel like since u have taken ochem 1 then ochem 2 should pick back up with the next chapter that ochem 1 did not cover. Just start with the next chapter

I disagree, I think organic 1 is harder. 2 just builds on the reaction principles you've learned in 1. It's really straightforward compared to 1 because a lot of reactions have patterns which makes the learning a breeze.

I recommend watching chad's videos on college organic and see which topics are covered on your syallabus. If you don't want to spend money and have solomons and fryhle as your textbook, I recommend finding sean hickey on itunes. He's another great teacher but unlike chad he records himself talking and moving about throughout the textbook.

Two ways to get through organic: the easy way and the hard way.

The hard way involves trying to memorize everything. There is too much to memorize and you may end up not doing as well as you hoped.

The easy way involves very little memorization. When learning a reaction, understand what is happening and why. What is the source of instability which initiates the reaction and what does the soup of reactants do to try to fix this soursce of instability? What new source of instability is then created and how can we fix it? Which side of the equilibrium is favored and why? How can we make this reagent if we cannot buy it? Like orgo 1, embrace thinking in 3 dimensions.

get the ochem II for dummies book! sounds stupid but i learned more from that book than my professor

Thanks guys highly appreciated! happy holidays!

heres Ochem 2 for you: electron rich, electron poor....2 in 2 out...redraw!

Most definitely strive to understand the concepts like someone else said, you will then be able to figure out most problems! I took the DAT right after i finished Ochem 1, i learned Ochem 2 exclusively from Chads videos and scored 23 on the DAT ochem section. when i finally took the course i breezed through it. Chads videos all the way!

Honestly, I think it might be better to just review Ochem1. OC2 is basically just the natural progression of the concepts in OC1, applied to more specific scenarios. If you can master Nu- and E+ interactions, electron pushing, resonance, sn/e,1/2 and the like. OC2 should be cakewalk.
IMO there isnt really a good reason to try to study ahead of the semester, its better to make sure you retain everything from last semester.
either way, good luck

You definitely need to know a lot about spectroscopy, Grignard reagents, carbonyls, and aldo condensations. I took a combined ORGO class and got a B so if you want me to help you u can sign up for my tutoring 🙂
