Quick question...I have taken Organic Chem I and got a B. But that was 2 years ago and I really don't remember much (and by much I mean hardly anything). I'm taking orgo II this summer and I was wondering if this is a god idea. Should I try to refresh myself on the orgo I material first since I have the text or is orgo II not that dependent on orgo I?

Refresh. OrgII builds off OrgI concepts. You'll definitely need to remember things like R,S when dealing with mechanisms.

Yes, it is a God idea. I believe your decision was discussed in the book of John. Everyone in the class got A's.

i always felt that each Orgo II exam was a cumulative exam of everything we'd ever learned in Orgo up until that point. My prof always found ways to through in alkene rxns into a lot of snytheses questions. Also on naming questions dealing with stereochemistry you always have to remember the R/S concepts. Even when doing the Williamson ether synthesis and Wittig rxn you need to have an understanding of SN2 reactions. I would recommend reviewing orgo I material so that orgo II doesn't kick you in the ass (as it does to many a student).

cheers.

When I took Orgo II it was very dependent on Orgo I. I mean at least for me Orgo I was learning all the concepts. From there we applied all the concepts we learned. (So often I'd read a new section, think to myself "Hey this is concept X" and then at the end of the section they'd basically say it's just concept X.) I'd definitely make sure to get the main concepts down. (You know, Sn1, Sn2, E1, E2 reactions, Nucleophiles and general trends. Oh, resonance becomes very important in Orgo II so make sure you get that down as well as pushing electrons.)

Honestly go to the professor and explain your situation and ask him or her what concepts you should definitely touch up on. (Sorry, it's been 2 years since I took Orgo II and my Orgo is not as strong as it used to be.)

I'd honestly say that ochem II is the only class I've ever taking in college that truly depends on the fact that you not only took the pre-req (ochem I), but remember what you did too. Calculus can be winged if you try hard enough but ochem II is suicide. Definitely refresh before diving into ochem II.

ochem2= death.......but i think if you review all the reactions youll be fine

Don't retake it. Just look at reactions.
