I am a practicing pediatric dentist considering applying for ortho. I would love the dual specialty for a variety of reasons. Has anyone here attended a paid ortho program? There are a few in the NYC area. What are the program demands like? I do not have kids but am hoping to have kids soon. I am wondering if the demands of the program would be too high to have children during those years (due to taking call, etc.) vs going to a program that requires tuition and does not involve on-call duties.

I'm not very familiar with the NYC programs, but I encourage you to also consider applying to paid programs like UCLA and UCSF, as both offer salaries and health benefits to their residents. Unlike the NYC programs, these aren't hospital-based, so I don't believe they require residents to be on-call. However, since they are research institutions, you may need to dedicate some time to research, although most programs typically involve some research component.

What’s ortho call? Are they getting woken up because a kid broke a bracket off at 3am 😭

Some programs treat all their dental residents the same, so ortho residents who are "on call" might still have to deal with emergency dental cases, like patients with tooth infections, if they get admitted to the hospital.

I attended a paid ortho program. The demands weren't bad at all and we didn't have to take call. Having a kid would be manageable.

I am peds and currently in ortho residency! If you want to chat about it, feel free to message me and we can talk on the phone! Happy to help.

Let’s be real no orthodontist knows the sweet, sweet beeping of a pager
To this day, if I hear anything sounding remotely like my pager, I instantly get level 11 irritable bowel syndrome…
