i'm a us citizen/trained dentist doing ortho in america right now. i'm not sure if i'd like to stay here or live abroad. anyone know what starting salary for an orthodontist in australia might be? (run of the mill private practice). also, are there a lot of possibilities for associateships?

hey dopa0321... u can check out payscale.com or salaryexpert.com..
from what i could gather the median salary is around AU $100,000 whether in a hospital or company.. not sure about private practice. however it sounds very low compared to what an orthodontist earns in the US.. so i'm not sure if those websites r correct, just what i came across!
good luck 👍

Dopa,

Orthodontists working in private practice in Australia can expect around 200k and upwards. I know a first year ortho graduate who is making about 350k. I'm pretty sure salaries are about the same in the US from what I've heard. If you own your own practice you can expect to pull in 500-1mil (or more). Salary here is (just as in the US) based on your turnover and your overhead.

If you do want to work in Australia you will of course be required to sit the ADC examinations. You will then need to submit a syllabus of your ortho program to the state dental board (in the state in which you wish to practice) for approval. All Australian ortho programs are 3 years in length. If your US program was only 2 years or 2.5 years long you may need to submit more documentation. Not sure.

Good luck

DrNush salary for orthodontists working in a public gov clinic can expect to earn 100-140k AUD/yr. Private practice would be much higher than that. I would say it would be very comparable to US salaries (minus the current exchange rates). The Aus dollar was almost 1:1 this past year and as the US economy goes into inflation over the next few years you will most likely see the exchange rate again be near 1:1 very soon.

Dopa,

you may want to contact THIS practice as I'm sure they would be able to give you more detailed information since 2 of them (one Aussie and one American) have completed their ortho training at UNC in the states and have already gone through the process of getting their training recognized and have obtained a license to practice in Australia.

You may also want to try THIS or THIS practice as well as they also have US ortho grads (2 Aussies who went to Harvard ortho and one American who went to UMKC ortho).

👍
