Funny you ask these questions. Many of us were looking for the same things years ago. Over time, I realized no such publications exist. At least, I've never found them. The entire ranking system is controlled by word of mouth and perception of other specialists. Each program is so unique, an attempt to rank programs would be unable to compare the same things across the board. I wish they had, so I could have evaluated an organized table as I prepared my rank list.

Publications have been made, however, about the way in which interviewing dental students rank schools as they prepare to submit their match lists. One I read can be found here: http://www.angle.org/anglonline/?request=get-document&issn=0003-3219&volume=076&issue=01&page=0084

Factors such as satisfied current residents, multiple techniques taught, length of program, location of program, and other criteria were considered. The most important thing I looked for while interviewing was the way current residents were treated and how they functioned w/ each other.

So, you just have to interview where you're invited. Then, you take each school's strengths and weaknesses into consideration. Unfortunately, no formal ranking is available. Good luck.

The reputation of ortho programs is by word of mouth. The main idea is to apply to a variety of programs and worry about where you want to go once you get the interviews. At the interviews, ask questions regarding your interests. Research, amount of time in clinic, variety of patients seen and techniques taught, etc.
