Just matched into ortho- very excited! I was wondering how easy it is to find a job post-residency! Not looking to open my own practice, at least right away.

Can anyone also give me insight into how I’d look for a job- do you find one on Indeed or are positions by word of mouth? What does your typical work week look like, is there a base pay?
Hoping to practice in NY. Thank you 😁

Congratulations! It’s understandable that you don’t want to open your office right away. After 10+ years of schooling, you just want to work, earn good income, pay down the debts, and start enjoying life. Only one person in my class (of 6 residents) took out $600k business loan to open his own office from scratch. I thought that was very brave of him to take such huge financial risk. I was the only one in my class who had F/T job offers (3 jobs….at 2 different corps and 1 private office) a couple of weeks before graduation. One was in the Army and had to serve 3 years. One bought an existing practice in a rural town (it’s his home town). One got a teaching job at our program and later became the program director. One was indecisive about where he would want to practice.

Indeed.com is a good place to look for jobs. That’s where my wife found her associate jobs. I found my jobs from a local newspaper’s job ad (the LA Times) because back then internet wasn’t as readily available as it is today. I haven’t had to use this Indeed.com website because I’ve stayed at this same corp for 20 years.

The only way to get a busy F/T work schedule is to get multiple jobs at multiple offices. Don’t be surprised when certain offices say that they only need you a couple of days a month. If you want to have a fixed stable income, get jobs at dental corps because they are large companies with a lot of money….they can guarantee you a fixed daily base salary ($1300-1800/day) + bonus. Since dental corps have a lot of offices throughout the state, they can offer you more days to keep you busy. Unfortunately, NY doesn’t have any corp office (according to Gryffindor, a frequent poster who has practiced in NY/NJ areas). If you want to stay in NY, I guess you have to find jobs at GP, pedo, and other private ortho offices. To get corp jobs, you have to move to states like CA, AZ, TX, FL etc.

Thanks for the response! I was concerned when I only saw 1-2 postings for orthodontist jobs in my area on indeed. Hopefully new positions will open up or I’ll be able to travel to neighboring states within an hour or so to find work.

You may have to widen your search radius and be willing to travel longer distance. I don't know about New York. Here in CA, there are plenty of corp jobs and in-house ortho jobs at GP and pedo offices that are available. Two of my wife's bosses (she has several bosses because she too has to travel to several offices) have asked her to ask me if I have extra days to work for them. I declined the offers because I am happy with my current job. I am also slowing down and don't want to assume additional liability risks for treating more patients.

Here we also have 2 local dental magazines (THE DENTAL TRADER and THE DENTAL SHOPPER) that are very popular among dentists and specialists in both Northern and Southern California regions. They post associate jobs and other dental related stuff like supplies/equipment sales, offices for rent, offices for sale, office space sharing etc. I don't know if your area has something similar. Here are the job ads for ortho in my area:
