I am auditioning this year in orthopedics and preparing my ERAS. A big question I have is which programs have a reputation of accepting applicants without requiring an audition rotation. If you have any suggestions I am very interested.

I don't want to waste money on interviews and flights around the country to programs that will interview students from all over and then only accept those that rotated with them. I have heard UMDNJ has that reputation.

Our go-to-surgeon person on campus told me that in the osteopathic surgical world,
audit rotation is a must, she has spoken to many program directors who basically said they will not consider a student at all, despite good stats, if they haven't rotated there. I am sure this applies to ortho too. If it were me, I'll make sure to audit at the top 3-4 hospitals that I really think I have a shot at and rock those rotations. Anyhow, best of luck!

I am rotating in five orthopedic auditions this fall, but I still feel that it would be irresponsible of me to only apply to these, and not other programs as well. I know of a few people that went where they did not rotate in orthopedics. I guess I am looking for other stories like this to figure out where to place my interview money.

Ortho is one of those specialities that requires manual dexterity besides just being smart. A 290 USMLE or 800 COMLEX doesn't tell you that the student has the physical dexterity to be able to do ortho well.

I know I am new to the game, but when you say "rotated" there, don't schools have a required list of things you need to complete your fourth year? basically so much in FP, GYN, Surge, etc. or is that only 3rd year? It seems like doing audition rotations at every hospital would leave you pretty one sided if you don't end up matching. Or is "rotated" enough to go to another part of the hospital, like family practice, so the surgeon can ask, "how is this guy?"

Ya it is completely ******ed that you have to rotate there to get an interview. How the hell are you able to roam around all of 4th year doing just ortho rotations to get enough interviews to feel comfortable? Seems like most people would be able to get 3 maybe 4 rotations done and then hope to God they actually liked those programs and are then ranked highly.

Seems like an incredibly stupid requirement.
