I’m applying next cycle but I’m running out of time and I currently have no letter writers.

When is it appropriate to ask faculty for letters? I have had no chance to build relationships with them. I’ve assisted and shadowed a handful of their surgeries but they don’t really know me.

Is this normal? Would it be ok for me to ask them anyway? Lastly with a couple of months left how can I take that step so I’m ready to apply?

I strongly recommend that at least three out of five letters come from OMS, preferably those with academic affiliations and whom you have worked with directly. The remaining two letters can be from generalists, other specialists, or researchers. Letters from individuals outside OMS hold little to no weight-after all, a residency recommendation should come from those who best understand and have completed the residency themselves. Given the unique demands of OMS, only those who have completed the residency can truly assess an applicant’s fit for it.

Strive to build genuine, long-term connections with your letter writers throughout dental school. This will allow them to write a more personalized and compelling recommendation. Remember, it is your responsibility to initiate and nurture these relationships. Avoid requesting a letter from someone who barely knows you, as this may result in a vague or even blank recommendation.

When making the request, be polite and express your gratitude to them afterwards. Recommendations are a privilege, not a right. Provide ample time for them to complete the letter-maybe consider asking between March and May. Best of luck to you.
